THE FLASH 7.10

 

RECAP - THE FLASH  7.10:  "Family Matters Part 1"  

Is it ME...or has Barry Allen made a litany of poor choices lately?  It seems as if The Fastest Man Alive has been extremely SLOW upstairs.  Since he's gotten his speed back, he's made a series of miscues, and looks one step behind every situation he's in.  This week, he continues to not be able to make the right choices, and it's putting him....AND Team Flash...in a bad position.  You have Alexa, whom Barry and the team are now trying to help in gaining control of Fuerza---the Strength Force---and Psych...the Sage Force....on the loose.  The Still Force---Deon---has now been confronted by Nora---The Speed Force---and she's ready to kill him.  And while ALL of this is going on----Cisco is pondering his next move with Kamilla, and Joe has a situation of his own brewing....

Barry...for all the good he tries to do, can often times be a little TOO much for people.  Such as the case THIS week in preparing Alexa to try and control Fuerza in preparation for any confrontation with Nora.  While Nora talks to Deon about Barry, and how they BOTH feel abandoned by him, and she's trying to get him to her side, Barry is putting a TON of pressure on Alexa to train in the use of her abilities in order to be ready for when Nora makes her move.  However, Barry comes off as ultra pushy, and a real dick.  We all get that Barry always puts the weight of the world on his shoulders...when he honestly doesn't HAVE to.  But Barry is sooooo overridden with guilt for all that's transpired, that when it comes time to prepare either the team, or someone like Alexa in the use of their abilities---he comes on too strong, and it has a negative backlash.  He didn't see this entire episode just how much pressure and stress he put on Alexa in order for her to get control of her other self.  Much like how he was with his daughter Nora back in Season 5, he gets to be too authoritarian, and puts undue pressure on those who are just learning about what they can do, and ends up stressing them out more.  In a failed attempt to get control of Fuerza, Barry was insistent that Alexa keep working, despite not understanding how scared she is at losing control.  She's under enough stress, and Barry just adds to it this episode.  Thank goodness for Caitlin putting him in his place to get him to see that he can rush her into this situation, and can't press her to get it right.  Once Barry learns to back off, and let Alexa figure it out ON HER OWN...we see the results later on.  

Iris and Barry explain to Alexa that she...like Psych, Deon, and Nora...are all connected because of what Barry and Iris did in reviving the Speed Force---they all share a genetic code.  So while Barry and Iris are somewhat "parents"...Nora, Deon, and Alexa are like their "children".  Nora is pissed off at Barry, and they're trying to keep tabs on her before she does some real harm.  On top of that, Team Citizen is investigating a crime...as is Barry in CSI mode...a rich guy who got put into a coma.  There starts to become a pattern when several OTHER rich individuals all turn up in the hospital in deep comas...mostly due to undue stress and fear that has put incredible stress on their bodies.  Through tracking down the clues, Iris and company discover that the person behind the attacks is Psych.  They do more digging into his human past, and find out that he's named Bashir, who has had it out for rich people for quite some time.  Turns out through Team Citizen's investigations, that his adopted parents were billionaires, but through shady dealings, had lost their money.  Those around him in school made fun of him, and when his parents died in a plane crash, he was orphaned again.  And those he thought were his friends seemed to turn their back on him.  So, he's out for revenge, and it turns out that all his victims were members of and Ivy League club he once belonged to.  He manages to claim another victim--a female--before Iris could try to talk him down.  He looks to go after her, but Flash arrives in time to save the ladies before Psych whammies them.  Psych then demonstrates a new power, and attacks Flash with these purple tentacles.  Flash suffers some bruising, but knows that Psych has got to be put down before he grows stronger.  

Cisco is having something CLOSE to a mid-life crisis---but not quite.  As Kamilla's career outside of Central City is taking shape, she's found opportunities in South Beach, where she can work.  She's kind of dropping not-so-subtle hints to Cisco about moving there.  Cisco does think it's nice, but he's also unsure about who and what he is.  For so long, he's been defined by STAR Labs, and what he's done with Team Flash, that he doesn't even know what exactly he's qualified for.  Kamilla assures him that he doesn't have to rush to make this decision.

As Team Flash prepares to face Psych one more time, Joe has had his own battle to fight:  with Agent Kramer, who is not going away quietly.  She starts inquiring about past metas such as Rainbow Raider, and Joe refuses to answer her about him, and also questions him about Patty Spivot and Julian Albert, both of whom were "reassigned".  Kramer's suspicions about the CCPD's connections to the metas also leads her right to a big target for questioning:  Barry Allen.  What Joe also discovers is extremely disturbing, as he sees weapons in the armory that are made to have ammo geared to shooting the metahuman cure at any meta criminal.  It appears that Kramer as the backing of the Governor of the state, and this doesn't sit well with Joe at all.  Joe talks to Cecile about investigating her, but Cecile puts the brakes on that idea, saying that Kramer is crafty, and she's now got the Governor on her side.  Cecile says that he gotta let her get to the truth on her own.  

Team Flash has found out where Psych plans on striking next.  As he stops his last classmate on the highway, his classmate looks to try and reason with him.  But Psych isn't having it, and just as he's about to induce his fear power on him, Flash and Alexa...who decides to go, save the last victim, and try to talk Bashir down.  He's isn't reasonable at first and attacks Flash, but Alexa brings Fuerza forth (by talking to her with Cait's old device to help her talk to Frost), and she convinces Bashir to stand down.  They tell him the truth about all his friends actually setting up a fun for him after his parents died to help him, but they never got a chance to tell him about it.  They also inform him about Nora's rampage, and want him to come back with them.  He agrees, and eventually, his victims revive.  Once back at STAR Labs, they fill him in on what's happening with Nora and Deon.  He's still not 100% board, but he doesn't get much more to say as Nora and Deon show up.  She says this is all on Barry, and she starts draining power from Bashir, Alexa, and Iris.  They all collapse because Deon all froze them in time, including Barry...who couldn't do anything.  Once they disappear, Barry snaps out of being frozen, only to see Iris and his "children" collapsed...unsure if they're dead or not.

Joe and Kramer have one last talk...and Joe reminds her of what he said about making sure she's on the right side of the line.  She says this is how it is now.  So, Joe turns in his badge, and his gun, and quits the CCPD, and walks out of the station as his fellow officers watch him leave.  Joe plays the only cards he has in his hand, and leaves the CCPD, as Kramer watches on.  

This episode is part one of a two-part arc that---HOPEFULLY---will end this whole Speed Force/ Sage Force/Strength Force/Still Force nonsense.  A rogue Nora Force just seems a tad cliche', and it's yet another person in Barry's life that betrays him.  It seems that this show falls back on that trope A LOT.  The concept has lost it's bite, and I'm kinda done with the "let's find someone close to Barry to stab him in the back later" concept.  And I get that, in a subliminal way, that treating these people like Barry and Iris' "children" is, in a manner of speaking, preparing them for their eventual parenthood when Bart arrives...along with Nora down the road....but this story just hasn't captivated me as much.  I was hoping for something with a little more substance and bite after the whole ordeal with Mirror Monarch.  But this story is just leavving me a tad lacking upon further reflection.  Now, if this leads to Godspeed and Bart...then I'll be okay.  But see, here is my OTHER problem:  shouldn't all of his be effecting Wally too?  Why isn't HE involved?  He's just as much a part of the Speed Force as Barry is.  It's a missed opportunity to give us an update on Wally, and to find out whether or not he's tethered to Barry's new Speed Force.  And I feel he'd be much better suited for this mission than anyone ELSE on Team Flash...especially with HIS zen-like wisdom. But I DO hope this wraps up soon...it's stalling the show out badly.

We are seeing the seeds further planted for Cisco's departure, but it appears that they'll drag it out long enough to get through the last 8 episodes (this season is slated for an 18 episode slant), and have his departure be a big, emotional one---Cisco DOES deserve that.  I also noticed that Chester took a back seat this week, in order to allow Cisco's final days to be told as a part of Team Flash.  It's good to see Team Citizen at work, and actually doing some investigating.  I love watching the ladies work...it's a nice break from seeing everything take place primarily at STAR Labs.  Plus, it also allows us to see Barry and Iris interact as reporter and CSI...working a case together in a sense.  

Joe blew us all away by quitting the force, but Cecile convinced him that there had to be a better way to get to Kramer other than investigating her, and nailing her to a wall.  She's got too much power now, and she's going to abuse the hell out of it now, considering the fact that the Governor will more than likely make her Captain of the department.  Joe leaving takes away Barry's shield from Kramer's prying eyes, and he's going to have to maneuver deftly around her to be able to function not only as a CSI...but as The Flash as well.  Sadly, we're also seeing that Kramer is no different from Black Lightning's Chief Ana Lopez...a good cop obsessed with destroying metahumans because of the fact they BOTH suffered tragedies due to metahuman interference.  It's unfortunate that we have two women in power who THINK they're for justice, but it's actually revenge, retribution, and prejudice BECAUSE of the other two.  Lopez has already fallen down the well, having been caught on a live stream courtesy of Jennifer Pierce, and exposed for what she is...and now she's taken metahuman genes to give her temporary powers, so that she can exact her revenge against Lightning.  I wonder how long it will be before Kramer crazily deduces that the only way to destroy the metahuman presence is by also destroying the so-called "source"...STAR Labs...and, possibly, The Flash himself?  Something to think about for down the road.

BLACK LIGHTNING 4.12

RECAP - BLACK LIGHTNING  4.12:  "The Book of  Resurrection - Chapter One:  Crossroads"  

The penultimate episode of the series Black Lightning helped us resolve SOME issues, while still providing us some questions before next week's Series Finale.  It's been quite a journey for the Pierce Family these last few years, but now the stakes have gotten bigger, because the threat is personal.  And what transpired this week will give us QUITE a finish next week, as we are about to bid adieu to Jefferson Pierce and his crime-fighting family. 

This next-to-last installment of our Electric Warrior and his clan saw them start putting together a plan to fight back against Tobias....who is riding about as high has he's EVER been since he returned to Freeland.  He set up the Pierce Family, framed Jefferson, and literally destroyed all of their reputations.  He's stolen a powerful emitter to take out their superpowers, and looks to arm the police with powers of their own, and weapons capable of killing metahumans...with Chief Ana Lopez hell bent on destroying all metas---and we find out her reason WHY in this episode.  We also saw Tobias, who had been looking to gain a seat on the Shadow Board, take over the mysterious faction, as he was denied his seat, because they felt he had not lived up to HIS end of the bargain, only to assassinate one of the board members with an assassin that had been rendered invisible due to the meta powers he had harvested from the pregnant women who'd gone to Montevista for further "testing" for a disease.  He then got the deed to the old Pierce house, and wanted to make a meet with Jefferson to officially sign it over.  He also then sent Red out to destroy Lightning once and for all.  So, this episode still shows Tobias riding high, plotting and scheming, and looking to FINALLY rid himself of his arch nemesis....forever.

As for the Pierce Family themselves, they know they have the goods on Tobias to take him down, but they have to be tactful, and plot his downfall carefully.  Jen is still in mourning over losing Uriah, and refuses to go out and use her powers, because Tobias threatened everyone she loved if she went out again.  Jefferson...in one of the actual SMARTER moves he's made of late, actually does what he is SUPPOSED to do:  be a caring, loving SUPPORTIVE father.  He knows that he NEEDS Jen in order to bring Tobias down, so he gives her a pep talk.  It seems to get her back into the right frame of mind, because she later goes out into the ionosphere to recharge her powers.  Once TC helps her get a lock on Red...she's off to face him down.  Meanwhile, Anissa, Gambi, and Grace plot to destroy the "clinic" that Montevista ran to get the pregnant women's metagenes, and destroy their records as well.  Anissa is thinking that they need to tell the mothers about how they were manipulated...which she IS right about....but Grace gives her a different perspective:  let them have normal lives.  Keep that aspect buried.  They have a chance to have good lives, and there's no sense in ruining it.  Grace knows what it's like to not have family, and to discover powers she didn't ask for.  Anissa is convinced, and they head out on THEIR mission....which they complete with ease, as they plant the bombs in the building, and they also destroy the servers inside as well.  

Jefferson, Lynn, and Gambi also plot to destroy the Nullifier, get the Emitter back, and get their powers as well.  This is where Gambi brings in Lauren, who now has been informed of what happened with her Emitter.  She and Lynn are introduced to each other, and Lynn and her start plotting ways to stop the nullifier.  Lynn also informs Lauren as to WHY Gambi kept certain things from her...that her family has powers.  Lynn agrees to help, especially when they find out about how the Promethium got there, and why Montevista was so quick to move into Freeland...so that they could strip mine the town of it. Gambi and Jefferson talk about one of the reasons WHY Tobias got to them is that he KNEW wbo they were, and their secret ID's.  Gambi created a device that would shock Tobias, and jar his memory, ensuring that the family secret stays that way.  

Chief Lopez wants Det. Shakur to arm his metahuman task force agents with the device Tobias gave her, and the case with the vials of metagenes.  She wants Lightning put down once and for all.  Shakur tries to reason with her, and asks her if she really wants to grant her officers metahuman powers, with the possibility they could die or go crazy or something.  He reminds her that he knows what happened to her husband, who was a meta, and how tragic that turned out, as her brothers got killed because her husband lost it  And as much as the eyes are on her because she's a female police chief, she gives Shakur 24 hours to bring Lightning in, or all bets are off.  When we see Jen again, she's in the ionosphere, charging up, and then takes off to get Red.  We STILL see that she's left a little of herself up there, and wonder just what in the world is going on with that.  Once Jen meets up with Red, her powers instantly begin to go on the fritz, and Red does try to kill her, but she manages to get one good charge off, and nails Red with hit.  With his device destroyed, he's helpless, and as Jen thinks about killing him, we later see her drop Red off just outside police headquarters, where she comes face to face with Chief Lopez.  Lopez draws her weapon, and says to her that she hates her, and that all metas should die.  Jen manages to pull the wool over Lopez's eyes, as she has been broadcasting to her social media site, and the feed is live, thus putting Chief Lopez right out there for all to see---her prejudice towads metas, and her mission to kill them all.  Jen takes off, having accomplished her mission, and this leaves Chief Lopez with A LOT of dirty looks and stares from her own officers as she re-enters the precinct.  She ends up looking at the feed on a pad in her office, and she breaks down---having been outsmarted by a metahuman.  It's too much for her, knowing that she lost her battle before it truly began.  This forces her to do something drastic, and out of frustration and anger:  Take one of the vials of metagenes, and inject herself with it.  She won't let Lightning win so easily.  She's going to kill her...and every meta---even if it means she's got to cross the line from being a police officer to a vigilante---seeking revenge.  

We check in on Khalil/Painkiller, as he's escorting Looker back to Freeland, so that she can testify against Tobias.  Looker tries to test Khalil and Painkiller's patience, and Painkiller even threatens to send her to the cops with no limbs...thinking that she doesn't need them to testify.  So, she shuts up.  But soon, his journey to Freeland is halted with the appearance of Ishmael...who is on orders from Tobias to kill them both.  Khalil and Painkiller then do battle with him.  Ishmael, the more experienced fighter, does get the upper hand on Painkiller, but no before he stops Ishmael's sword from laying the death blow.  Painkiller bleeds all over the sword and hilt, thus using his toxic powers to infect Ishmael, who is quickly killed in the process it seems, but not before declaring that Painkiller cheated.  It was then that Agent Morse, and Det. Shakur show up, and escort Looker away to testify.  Painkiller feels there's business to be done in Freeland...his mission to still destroy the Pierce Family, but Khalil says that Jen is better off on her own.  Their part in this mission seemingly done.

Jefferson calls Tobias, and tells him the house is his....he'll sign the papers.  Tobias wants to meet where their whole story started:  the house, where Jefferson watched Tobias beat his father to death with his goons.  Jefferson realizes that he might end up dying from this ordeal, so before his meet with Tobias, he has one more quiet moment with Lynn, where they both apologize to each other for all the hurt, but realize that this is their world.  So Jefferson gives her a revised will.  He then takes off to his father's house to meet Tobias, and finish this.  As Tobias gloats about finally getting the best of Jefferson, Jefferson goes to try and use the device on Tobias to wipe his memory, but Tobias was quick on the draw, and managed to catch Jefferson before he could use it.  Tobias then proceeds to beat down Jefferson, mocking him the whole time.  Jefferson tries to fight, but he's out powered.  Tobias then says that it's time to put and end to him, and will kill him the same way he killed Jefferson's father.  At the end of the episode, Tobias uses Jefferson's cell to call Jennifer...and tells her that he knows who she is, and that she'll suffer the consequences for going out and being a hero---and shows her that he's seemingly killed Jefferson, proclaiming that Black Lightning is dead.  

For the next-to-last episode, we got some huge emotions coming from various members.  We also got some resolution to some hanging storylines, and the set up for the huge finale.  Jen suffers a bit this episode, because SHE is the one who wanted revenge on Red for Uriah's death.  But TC...who has been like a brother to her...has done his best to keep her in check.  And in this episode...she manages to keep it together, though she's still the same stubborn as hell Jennifer we all know.  It was good that she got to reconnect with Jefferson, and he told her that the city needed Lightning...so go do it.  She managed to not only defeat Red, and plop him down right at Chief Lopez's feet, but got the better of her as well, as she managed to broadcast through her live feed, Lopez's literal hatred for all metahumans, her desire to have them all killed.  Lopez is a character who has now SERIOUSLY fallen from grace, and her being caught in the act of confessing her hatred in front of millions of subscribers---it causes a breakdown, because now no one in the community will look at her the same.  Her quest to not only take down Lightning for SUPPOSEDLY killing the Mayor, but we also discover through Det. Shakur, that her husband was a meta, and went on a rampage, killing her brothers.  It's this deep seeded hatred that his driven her----much like ANOTHER character we know:  Christine Kramer, who has her OWN prejudices against metahumans because a meta killed her unit.  These two women are now using positions of authority to carry out their own brand of justice...even if it means crossing the line.  They feel THEIR end justifies the means, and that what THEY are doing is right, because THEY are the law.  We're seeing it lead to Lopez's downfall, as she has now inoculated herself with metagene powers, dead set on bringing destruction to Lightning and anyone else who's a metahuman. 

It was great to see the team finally working as a unit again, each with their own mission.  Though Anissa and Grace do NOT have powers, their plan to blow up the Montevista clinic is successful.  And while Anissa wanted to inform the mothers who where lied to about their treatment, Grace is reminded of her own troubled past, and in finding out about her own powers.  She feels it's best to let sleeping dogs lie...especially if it means these mothers and their children have a fighting chance to become real families.  Even though she's had her own fear of her powers, and has been alone....she has a family now...and doesn't want to see it ruined.  Lynn and Lauren working together was pretty cool as well, considering that now Lauren is in on the family secret, and why Gambi kept it hidden from her all this time.  But these two women have mutual respect for each other, and Lauren understands why Lynn and Gambi are doing what they're doing.  

The Painkiller/Ishmael fight was pretty good.  Nice choreography, and it looked like Ishmael was going to get the better of him.  But leave it to Painkiller to use his ace in the hole:  his powers.  I thought it was funny how Ishmael felt Painkiller "cheated" to beat him.  But the assassin is done for, and Looker is in custody.  With this part of Painkiller's mission done I hope it's back to tracking down Odell and his daughter.  Whether or not the series is greenlit, it's been fun watching him operate.  And the actor has done a stellar job of portraying the duality of the two characters.  

We had a heavy feeling that before he was brought down, Tobias was going to get in one last good lick against Jefferson.  And I think Jefferson himself knew that he was probably NOT coming out of this scenario alive...thus giving Lynn his will.  But Jefferson wanted to go out on HIS terms.  And Tobias seemingly obliged.  He feels he is at his apex right now, and feels he's got the whole world in his hands.  See, Tobias wants to expand his operation in Freeland, but out towards Coast City, Central City, National City, Gotham, Metropolis, and so on....and taking control of the Shadow Board will help him accomplish that.  But right now, in this moment, as Mayor of Freeland...he feels as powerful as he could imagine.  So, his downfall is going to be epic in this last episode.

BATWOMAN 2.14

 

RECAP - BATWOMAN  2.14:  "And Justice For All"  

Batwoman certainly has her hands full with Black Mask, his False Face Society goons, and now the addicts of Snake Bite out on the streets.  There's also trying to see how she can handle Sophie knowing her secret, Then there's Mary, who got the bad news that her dad is a Snake Bite addict.  She's got to find a way to get through to him.  Alice, on the other hand, has QUITE the conundrum on her hands:  she knows that this Sersi Sionis is really her sister Kate.  What she will do with that knowledge is going to be a story in and of itself.  So, let's peek into Gotham THIS week and see what transpired...

The new version of Snake Bite that's recently hit the streets has developed quite an interesting side effect:  It's gotten people SO hooked, they become hungry, and because of its chemical components, it's turned addicts into literal zombies.  After battling some False Facers, Batwoman trails a suited man into a cathedral that has been used by squatters as shelter.  What she witnesses is a scary sight:  people eating a man, looking like zombies. Later on, as she is having a fund raiser for the youth center with her new friend there, she's met up with Luke, who explains that more cannibal attacks have occurred.  She feels it should be a GCPD problem.  Just then, two white cops enter the bar, and accost Ryan for having music too loud in the bar.  She says she's having a fundraiser, and the cops ask for a permit, and she doesn't have one.  Luke tries to diffuse the situation, but to no avail. Both he and Ryan are arrested.  Not too long after, Sophie comes in to find out what happened, and she confronts the cops, who want her to just go away.  Her being a Crow didn't do much, as she got in the one of the cops' face, and she is eventually arrested.  There's a lot of bickering between the three, as they all did not diffuse the situation in the best manner.  Sophie explains to Ryan that she can't hide behind a mask...be someone else.  She's Sophie 24/7, and she can only do so much to change.  Soon, a long-haired white man is thrown in with them.  He's a car thief, but says he's glad he's in there, because of the zombies outside.

During this whole zombie ordeal, there's a man named Richard who had taken the new Snake Bite, and had been feeling the urge to feast upon people.  He sends a woman away in the alley he was in before he ate her.  He got so bad that he ended up in Mary's clinic, cuffing himself to one of the beds, to prevent himself from feasting.  Before HE busted in, Mary was taking care of her dad, as she was trying to get him to open up, and come to grips with the fact that he did all he could to save both Beth and Kate.  But in moping in his failures, he's pushing away the one daughter he has left.  She has had to learn to deal with those losses by doing the things she knows she can do.  She knows he wants a do-over, but he can't have one. Richard then breaks his cuffs as he begins to succumb to the Snake Bite, and Jacob orders him to leave.  Richard was another who had taken the lethal drug in order to be with his wife again, as she had died not too long ago.  

Armani, the head of the youth center and a lawyer, manages to get bail for Luke, Sophie, and Ryan, and they have to go and see if they can stop the zombies before they run over the town. Sophie rallies her team, but Agent Tavarov gets cocky and starts to get in Sophie's face, but she reminds him who's in charge.  She sends them out, and at the same time, Batwoman suits up, and Luke gives her a case that has a vaccine in it, but she has to deliver it person to person.  So, as she's out there fighting, she manages to start inoculating those in the church that had been effected, but is soon shot at by Agent Tavarov, who starts killing addicts left and right, against Sophie's orders.  But he tunes her out, and says for them to find the Snake Bite that's left over, and they bail.  Batwoman, who had managed to avoid getting shot, makes her way out of the church, and eventually inoculates Richard, as he was about to eat a cop.  

With the threat ended, Sophie and Ryan are back at the bar, and they talk about trying to change things.  Sophie says she's quitting the Crows, because she can't believe in them anymore.  She doesn't know what she'll do, but she knows it will be better without them.  She also let's Ryan know that there's that line she's going to have to draw when it comes to being Ryan Wilder and Batwoman...and that includes her budding relationship with Amari.  Ryan does end up having that talk with Amari, and lets her down gently, saying that all she can do is offer friendship at this point. 

Looking in on Alice, we see that she knows the woman with whom she's given a new face is her sister Kate.  She tries to get through to her, but Roman comes in to halt any further interrogation by Alice.  She says she can stick around to help with her face, and Roman says that he has a cosmetics company, so he orders her to leave...and warns her to keep her mouth shut.  But, that doesn't stop Alice, as he pays a visit to the good Dr. Rhyme, and wants to know how to get Kate's memory back.  Rhyme says that she needs a personal item of Kate's, something that Kate held dear.  Alice manages to rummage through some of her belongings, and finds a set of keys.  Before she goes though, she bumps into Ocean, who had been waiting for her.  She says she's got things to do, and tells him Kate is alive.  She needs to get Enigma to fix Kate's memories.  When they get back to Rhyme's office...and let her down...she says to Alice that if she can return the memories of Kate, it will also be whatever it was that Kate was feeling for her at the time.  Alice is okay with that.  When she presents the keys, it was to Kate's motorcycle...and how she loved riding it, and it meant freedom for her.  Enigma is okay with what Alice wants, but before they can do more, Enigma says that Alice has to know the password---the right word to trigger Kate's memories.  And before she can find out what it is....Ocean kills Enigma.  He tells Alice he loves her, and Kate doesn't.  All Kate has done is cause her misery.  It was Kate who chose a city over Alice, and it was Kate that had her locked up.  He doesn't want her to get Kate back.  He says what Kate offered wasn't love.  It makes Alice stop and ponder for a bit.

This episode ends on a terrible note, as Luke and Mary were discussing dinner, when he spots the guy he was in the cell with earlier trying to steal a car.  He stops the guy, but not before Agent Tavarov shows up with his Crows crew.  The thief then accuses Luke of stealing the car and assaulting him to save his own ass.  And when Luke when to reach for his phone, Tavarov shouts "GUN!", and Luke is shot three times, as he's on the phone with Mary. 

This episode hit some emotional beats, as well as some social ones ripped out of the actual headlines.  The dirty cops who illegally arrested Ryan, Luke, and Sophie were white, and they arrested 3 black people, and it showed just how dirty the police can be....as well as go out of their way to violate civil rights in order to "uphold the law".  It was blatant abuse of power in this episode, but I was glad to hear from Amari that those cops were under investigation.  But we also got to see MORE abuse of power, as Agent Tavarov has started taking a more arrogant and cocky tone with Sophie, and challenging her leadership of the Crows.  And when he went into direct violation of her orders, it was enough for her to quit...which has been LONG overdue. It's time to move Sophie onto The Bat Team, and with her and Ryan making some serous headway this episode, it was one step closer to getting the team we want.  On top of that, to have Sophie and Luke talk about how they were brought up, and how that---despite their upbringings---still had to fight to be equal, because regardless of their place on the social totem pole...they were still seen as outsiders.  

We got to focus on ONE addict in this episode---the man named Richard---who had lost his wife in a terrible accident, and wanted to escape into the hallucination the Snake Bite brought just so he could be with her again.  This was a great allegory for Jacob, who had been using to escape his life....so he could have a do-over with Beth and Kate...all the while ignoring the ONE daughter he still has:  Mary.  Mary giving him the parental lecture shows us why Mary is such an integral character...and not an airhead.  Jacob looks like he's sober, but how long he stays that way is anyone's guess.  But hopefully for HIM, it's his wake up call.  Especially since Agent Tavarov has been throwing his weight around, and we knew he was after Sophie's job..  And what will happen to Jacob when he loses Sophie, now that she's quit?  If Tavarov gets closer to leading the Crows, they'll be nothing more than a squad of brutes, enforcing their will on Gotham for so-called "safety and security".  And he already abused his power in a BIG way by shooting at the addicts in the church, when he was specifically told NOT to.  And then he shot Luke...or which he'll claim self defense.  

That's another thing...if they kill off Luke...that's like Flash killing off Cisco....you lose your tech guy and the dude that can build your arsenal.  But I'm hoping this will start putting an end to The Crows.  I've never liked them, and I hope they are destroyed and taken down by season's end.  I know what I'd like to see---since the Commissioner of Police of Gotham City had been killed earlier on...I'd like to see Sophie become the next Commissioner.  So, that her and Batwoman can fight side by side.  I'm wishful thinking. And what of Alice?  Has Ocean's words gotten to her, and will she leave her sister to her own devices, or will she continue to get Kate from Black Masks' brainwashing?  We've got some questions to answer in the next few episodes before the season ends.  So, lemme know YOUR thoughts, as you subscribe and leave a comment below.

DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW 6.3

 

RECAP - DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW  6.3:  "The Ex-Factor"

Our wayward Time Team had to loosen up the pipes this week, as they had to get involved in an American Idol like contest. An alien landed on Earth in the year 2045 - Behrad and Zari's present time---and he's looking to conquer the planet by defeating it's king in combat.  However, this alien quickly finds out that the current "King" is that of a social media influencer and house disc jockey----Zari's former fiancée, DJ S'Mores.  

The quest to find Sara continues, but we take a little time with Zari and John, as they try to find some private time for a little hanky panky, but are rudely interrupted by Zari's publicist, and talks about DJ S'Mores being killed by an alien.  According to Zari and Behrad, he's responsible for keeping network TV alive in 2045.  So, the team is jumping into the time pool to save DJ S'Mores from being eviscerated, and to nab the alien in question, so that they can find out what he knows about Sara.  This mission was perfect for Zari, as she got to slip bacck into Media Influencer mode, and reconnect with her audience, as she'd been out of the loop for awhile.  This is a bit disconcerting for John, who's not the type of guy who likes the glitz and glam.  While the team is set to capture Lord Nox...our alien in question...the contest is underway, and Lord Nox enters the picture to kill DJ S'Mores, but Behrad and Nate manage to prevent the assassination.  But DJ S'Mores likes what he sees in Nox, and puts him into the contest.  And Nox actually makes it into the finals.  While Spooner gives Ava the business about how Mick treats everyone, the actually manage to capture Nox, and he says that he is there to conquer worlds by challenging the leaders of the worlds.  They make him understand the rules of the competition, and he agrees.  But says that if they skirt the rules of competition, he will send the armada to Earth, and the invasion will begin. 

Having been gone for awhile, Zari's brand has taken a turn for the worse and her business is failing.  As DJ S'Mores mocks Zari, John sets his head on fire, and Zari has a plan to save him AND stop the invasion:  She becomes the Wild Card contestant for "Da Throne".  Spooner and Ava watch from the ship, and she admires how Ava is keeping things together.  She still questions her about Mick, but she says that Mick is a special case.  Zari---the Dragon Lady herself---comes out and wins her competition, and instantly zooms to the Finals, where she'll face off against Lord Nox.  But before things go further, Mick comes out, and is still pissed off they're not finding Sara, and initiates Gideon to launch an attack on Nox.  Nox says that if they fire, the armada will sweep in and take over the planet.  With Zari prepping for the final battle, Nate and Behrad decide to dress up John for the next round...the interview.  John manages to overhear Zari and her mother talk about her relationship with John.  Her mother likes the show, so she showed up when she found out Zari was on it.  But Zari shoots down the possibility of any true romance with John, which upsets him.  And during the interview process, he pretty much has his fill and walks off.  They argue, and John walks off.  It also turns out that it was Zari's assistant who leaked the news of her break up with DJ S'Mores, because SHE was the reason they broke up.  She also is doing what she can to make Zari miserable because she can, and it gives HER an exclusive story to make HER popular.  She tries to put the moves on John, but he isn't having it, seeing as to how this woman wants nothing more than to have Zari continue to be miserable, as long as it gives HER subscribers.  

DJ S'Mores offers Zari a way she can save her brand, but he is secretly trying to sabotage her, by having her and Nox sing the same song, ensuring she'll lose.  Nate and Behrad get ahold of this, and try to put an end to it.  As the last competition begins, we see Nox come out and sing the song Zari intended to sing.  Feeling like they had lost, John said that they can do better.  So, when Zari comes out to sing, it's to the Buzzcocks song her and John were listening to back at his house during the beginning of the episode.  John then joins her onstage, and they pound out the song, and win the competition.  With Zari now the winner of "Da Throne", Nox has no choice but to concede loss in battle.  Both realize they have something special, and are willing to give it a shot.  

Back on the ship, Nox bows to the crew, but when he opens up his battle suit, he's nothing but a tiny alien.  He says that subterfuge has been his race's best ally...and technology.  Mick then steps on, and kills, the poor guy, having drawn an alien that MIGHT help them get closer to finding Sara.  

Meanwhile, back on the alien planet, Gary is desperate to get he and Sara to safety, as she is feeling the effects of the Amelia Earhart's attack.  She begins to hallucinate images of Ava all over, including the oncoming intruders.  She orders Gary to go eat the intruders, which he does.  However, he finds out afterwards that they were all Ava clones.  He goes to get Sara, but she took off after an Ava clone.  She catches up to the Ava clone, who tries to lure her onto a ship, but she kills it...saying that she KNOWS Ava, and she wasn't it.  She does enter the ship anyway, and is met by a man who has had quite an interest in meeting her.

This episode had some fun moments, as we got to see the return of the goofy character DJ S'More's.  We also see that Zari's assistant has been sabotaging her behind her back, so that she can build her own name at Zari's expense.  But we see some serious maturity from Zari this week, as she formulates the plan to save the day, by taking the stage and singing.  The Buzzcocks song came into play two times this show:  once at the beginning during their failed romantic interlude, and at the end, when they joined up on stage to kill the number and win the show.  It's new territory for Zari and John, and this will be interesting to explore as the season progresses.  Spooner is amazed at how Ava is handling things, but feels that Mick takes advantage of her.  Though she lectures Mick himself on what a douchebag he is, it doesn't REALLY sink in until Ava dresses him down a little later on after he tried to fire upon Nox during the contest.  We see that Mick hates the fact that his ONE friend on the whole ship---Sara---is not there.  Of ALL the members of the Legends, Mick and Sara are the only two originals left...and Mick isn't for change.  Besides, he's also dealing with the aspect of being a father with a daughter who now is spending more time at college, and less with dear old dad.   We continue to see why Nate and Behrad are the Abbot and Costello of the team...they provide the true lightheartedness on the team.  

As for Sara...she's NOT in a good place, and not sure how long she's got.  But she's got a mysterious person who's been interested in her, and also has Gary trying to keep up with her, and help her out...in his own special Gary kind of way.  But...it turns out his alien form is useful.  I'm real curious to see who this guy is, and what he wants with Sara Lance.  And can Gary save her in time?  

Overall, a fun episode...what you'd expect from the Legends.  Lot of comical moments, but we got some story going on here, and there's a nice balance.  They never take themselves TOO seriously until hey have to...which is when the crisis they're trying to avert is close at hand.  And we got a singing competition out of it---allowing Tala Ashe to show off HER amazing talents.  What did YOU guys think of this installment?  Subscribe and leave me a comment below.

SUPERGIRL 6.7

 

RECAP - SUPERGIRL  6.7:  "Fear Knot"  

It's the biggest test for the Superfriends yet, as they finally are ready to enter the Phantom Zone and rescue the Girl of Steel. And this test is daunting, because of the dangers the Zone presents to the team and their psyches.  But they will take the risk to save Supergirl, and bring her home.  And this week, each member of the team got to face their fears. 

Each member of the team had a job to do this week, as they made final plans for their trip into the Phantom Zone, ready to bring Supergirl home, now that they had the meteorite with her DNA on it to track here when they went in there.  But J'onn made everyone understand that they had---at best---2 hours to accomplish their mission, before their ship (which J'onn converted the Tower into), would be breached by Phantoms.  It appears the team had time to do this while Dreamer and Brainiac were in the past on THEIR mission---which took, apparently, 3 days.  Kelly, having combat experience and learning how to deal with fear, offers everyone on the team training on how to deal with those fears.  The team then departs into the Phantom Zone, and the fun begins.  Meanwhile, Kara and her father Zor-El are trying to find another portal to hop through to get closer to finding an exit, when they are attacked by Phantoms.  Kara gets hit, and becomes effected.  During the course of the episode, we see the Phantom's power begin to effect Kara, by having her fear the worst:  the deaths of her friends.

It doesn't take long once the team gets into the Zone that they begin to have problems.  The ship it struck, and there seems to be a malfunction somewhere.  With 1:50 left before they're trapped in the Zone, each member of the team gets exposed to their worst fears, and we get to see those fears play out in front of us.  Alex's fear is the fact that she may not be able to save Kara.  J'onn insists Alex stay behind, but with one of the Phantoms escaping the containment unit on the ship, they go fight it, only for Alex to be struck by the creature.  Alex traps J'onn in the unit, as she feels SHE is the only one to be able to bring Kara back because they're sisters.  They then realize that Alex being infected is drawing the Phantoms close to the ship, and she realizes that all she's done is make the mission WORSE.  So, she's willing to sacrifice herself so the team can save Kara.  She puts herself into the airlock, and gets sucked out.

Lena and Nia get a chance to bond over the loss of their mothers, and what they meant to them.  Lena discusses a book that her mother had left her about a creature from the deep.  We learned that Lena's mother had drowned.  A coolant leak leads her and Dreamer into the engine room to repair the leak, but soon, they are confronted by this water creature that goes out of its way to drown her friends, including Nia.  The creature then turns itself to Lena before she wakes up from the nightmare.  

Kelly responds to some kind of mechanical failure with the containment, and she goes to check it out, only to see Alex, Lena, and Nia possessed by the Phantom.  She begins to fear that she has no place on the team, and that she's not cut out for this.  However, Kelly uses her fear training to get through to Alex, and succeeds.  Her and Alex escape, only for Alex to tell her to take off and get into an escape pod, because she can't hold out much longer. Kelly refuses to go, and Alex succumbs to the Phantom again, and then the crew marches toward her.  

Dreamer's nightmare begins with her dreaming about the containment unit empty, and the Phantom being loose.  Brainy thinks she's overreacting to her dreams, because she can't interpret them properly, which is kind of a jab at her, and part of her fear.  But that fear is realized, as the Phantoms edge closer to the ship, and start tearing it apart. She tries to use her powers to seal a breach, but she's unable to do it as Brainy is about to get sucked into the Phantom Space. 

J'onn's nightmare begins as Brainy seems a bit off, and they find out the Phantom is loose from containment.  J'onn goes to face off against the creature, and---try as it might to overpower him---J'onn actually manages to fight him off and take him down.  Once he realizes that he's faced his fear, and that he's defeated the Phantom, it appears that everyone else is able to overcome their fears---Kelly steps up with the Guardian shield in her dream, Alex overcomes her fear and realizes that she doesn't have to have the onus on her shoulders to save Kara, and Lena embraces the water creature, as it morphs into her Mother...and Lena makes peace with the creature.  Dreamer seems to be the only one who still can't overcome her nightmares, but everyone is awake and in real time now.  And just in time, because they've managed to lock onto Kara's DNA, and have located her.

Kara is slowly succumbing to the Phantom's fear, and feels like all is lost, and that everyone will die if they  come after her.  Zor-El...who had been where she was, won't allow that fear to overcome her, and he promises they'll fight to get a way out.  Just as Kara comes out of it, there's yellow sunlight that suddenly radiates the landscape.  It heals Kara, and she gets her powers back, as she spots the ship.  Her and her father are saved, as she flies the both of them towards the ship....Supergirl is going home.  As the ship takes off, we see that Nixly has hitched a ride on the ship----she's going to escape herself...and THAT trouble is coming to Earth.  

This episode finally ended the Supergirl-is-trapped-in-the-Phantom-Zone arc. Which was good, because were it to drag on longer, this final season would've gotten BORING.  As it is, the show has KIND of been in some sort of cruise control.  While I'm glad other characters have gotten a bit more development, it STILL needs the Girl of Steel to make it work---SHE is the hero.  And we need to get as much Supergirl as we can before she flies off television for good.  I'm glad we got to see most everyone deal with their own personal fears in this episode as to what their place is on this team...except Dreamer.  It STILL seems like we're not getting any resolution to HER story unless she's able to find a way to mend the family fences, and learn to better control her powers.  They NEED to have that happen as well.  For her to grow as a hero, this is a necessity.  Lena and Kelly...the new members of the team, have now shown their worth, and now see their purposes filled.  Lena also got to make peace with her past, which is good going forward.  Now, the only albatross around HER neck is the Luthor name.  J'onn proved to be the strong leader we all expect him to be, and I think it serves well in the future for National City should Supergirl take off at the end of the series. For Kelly...we've inched one step closer to her taking over the role her brother James originated as Guardian.   As for Alex...well, she realizes that she isn't always the best option for a mission's success.  That J'onn's leadership on display, doing what is the overall best for the team is one of the team's greatest strengths.  I still think Alex is trying to find her way as Sentinel.  

Let's hear it for Zor-El stepping up and giving his daughter the encouragement speech this episode, when it seemed Kara was lost.  His own experience there in the Zone allowed him to give her the motivation she needed to fight off the fear the Phantom implanted in her.  Now, with her and her father out of the Zone, it'll be interesting to see how their father/daughter dynamic functions on Earth.  Especially now that he'll discover the same powers Kara has, he'll now possess.  And will he go back to Argo and be reunited with Alura?  Still some story to tell with Zor-El.  I think it would be EXTREMELY cool for Kal-El to see his uncle again, and have the boys introduced to him...as well as the boys getting to spend time with their 2nd cousin Kara. And, of course, we didn't HONESTLY think that Nixly was destroyed in the barracks explosion did we?  Naaaah....we KNEW she'd be back, and it will also be a fascinating story when  she starts creating ALLL sorts of trouble on Earth.  Makes me wonder if Mixy will actually reappear and help Supergirl defeat her?  There's some story to tell here, and hope we get some of it before the show closes out.

THE FLASH 7.9

 

RECAP - THE FLASH  7.9:  "Timeless"

Team Flash just can't seem to get on the same page these days.  In the wake of Frost taking a life in prison without parole term, they're also dealing with the fallout of the many variants of the Speed Force and how to handle them.  This week, we see how a difference in opinion can splinter a team.  Plus...we have a surprise guest make an appearance, and two people who have been struggling with internal questions that will eventually change BOTH of their futures.

"Timeless" gives us the aftermath of what happened when Nora killed Alexa Garcia...who was Fuerza---the Strength Force.  Nora put it on Barry and Iris that this happened.  That when they brought HER back, they brought these other aspects of the Force into being, and now they've attached themselves to other people.  She tells them that they're dangerous, and they must be destroyed.  Barry refuses to kill them, and Nora---who goes out of her way to call Barry "her beautiful boy"---says he doesn't have a choice.  It's here where we get our first splinter of team unity.  As the team tries to figure out how to stop Nora before she kills the other forces, Barry feels that he needs to go back in time to the point the forces were created....and stop them from coming into being.  Iris isn't on board with this, and says that they should try to find Nora and reason with her.  Barry feels she's beyond reason, and they need to do this now, before people get hurt.  Iris sticks to her guns, and tells Barry that he's going to be doing this on his own, while she and Team Citizen take a crack at trying to find Nora and trying to talk her down. Everyone warns Barry that he could lose his speed in the process---but that's a sacrifice Barry's willing to take.  Cisco agrees with Iris on this, but he said he'd help Barry anyway.  Chunk is on board, and Barry races into the past----Starling City circa 2000----to grab the Timeless Wells for assistance in his plan.  Harrison agrees to help him.

Cisco's been wrestling with some personal issues as he listens to Kamilla discuss that her photos of Eva during her reign of terror were making waves, and they're being shown at a gallery in San Francisco.  Cisco is bothered by something, and Kamilla can tell, but he's happy about this even happening for her.  Later on, she joins Iris and Allega, as she gets to use a special camera rigged to pick up Nora or the other Force's signatures.  Kamilla also notices that there's some residual force energy still within Iris.  And they hope that they can use Iris as bait to lure Nora out.  They figure out that the one place Nora will go to reconnect with things is the old Allen home.  You see, Iris looks at the Speed Force as a person---Nora---while Barry does not.  

While constructing the old tachyon device to pick up and capture the force particles at the moment of creation, Deon---the Still Force---shows up at STAR Labs.  He and Barry talk about how Nora is out to get him, and will kill him.  Barry says he wants to be able to save Deon from ever having to get connected with the Still Force, but Deon won't hear any of it.  He feels like a God, and he's going to be damned if Barry takes that away from him.  He takes off and fries the tachyon device.  Chester feels he can fix it, and he gets to work.  Barry, meanwhile, has a talk with Joe, seeking fatherly advice.  Joe sets him on the right track, and talks to him as a father would to a son---and reminds him of how Wally was when he came into their lives---reckless, bad attitude, lost...but reminds Barry of how Wally turned out.  Barry needs to think of these forces as his children---he brought them into existence.  And despite what they are NOW...you don't judge your children.  Armed with this knowledge, Barry goes to put his plan into place.

Team Citizen make it to the old Allen residence, and when the ladies arrive inside, they head into Barry's old room.  But they're soon trapped, as Psych makes his reappearance.  He manages to give them all nightmares, including Iris....who's nightmare is seeing Nora tell her that she'll NEVER live up to the memory of her---Barry's mother. Iris tries to reason with Psych...trying to get him to understand his life being in danger.  But he won't listen.  At this time, Barry arrives back at STAR Labs, and with Timeless Wells as his beacon, the go back in time around 17 days ago, and Barry and Wells watch Iris ignite the Speed Force once again.  Wells looks upon his future self in acknowledgement, and then returns his focus to Iris.  As they hit the roof, they are watching the beautiful display of the Forces being brought into existence.  Barry actually sheds a tear, as he can feel a connection to them.  He steps into the lightning beam, and uses the tachyon device to capture the forces.  He succeeds, and in the present, all the forces begin to suffer and die.  As the team counts down until the mission is finished, Barry begins to have second thoughts.  He then smashes the captured particles, and allows them to fly free....and lets the forces be born.  He remembers what Joe told him, and feels that his "children" deserve to live.  

Back in the present, he and Iris apologize to each other for not taking each others' thoughts and opinions on the matter into consideration.  They both  agree, however, that they will deal with this issue together...as a unit.  They eventually feel a tremor in the building, and they head into the med bay, where Caitlin said that Alex sat up and looked alive, but then fell back dead again.  Barry and Iris feel that maybe she isn't really dead.  They both realize that they can use their energy to bring her back....and it works!  Alexa is awake and alive.  

We get yet another Wells/Cisco goodbye, and Wells reminds him of holding onto the things he loves most, and following his heart.  Afterwards, Kamilla and Cisco talk, and both agree that they need to leave Central City.  But...how do they tell their friends?  To close things out...we see Deon out on a walk when he bumps into Nora....who's ready to kill him.  

This show touched on the issue of time travel again, and what a disaster it CAN be...but having Barry willing to break that Cardinal Rule to save people isn't always the best route, and I had to agree with Iris this episode.  It's honestly the first time in a LONG time we've seen Barry and Iris at odds about ANYTHING.  And, well, it looks a bit weird, but we have to remember that married couples aren't ALWAYS going to agree on everything.  It's nice to know we can still throw that in there to make their marriage a bit more authentic.  The fact that Barry got some fatherly advice from Joe was the pivotal point in this episode, as it allowed Barry to see things from a different perspective. It made him understand that--despite what they are---they are, in essence, his and Iris' "children".  And how they help their "offspring" before Nora kills them all will be the biggest task of all.  It was also interesting to see what Iris' fear was when Psych attacked her mind---her fear of not being able to live up to the memory of Nora Allen.  Barry has, in his own way, put his mother on a pedestal...and the one person in this life (aside from Iris), that he's loved the most.  It was HER death that spurned him on, and eventually led him into becoming The Flash.  So, it's understandable for Iris to have that fear.  Of course, it was good to see Wells again, and I do believe he's slated for a couple more appearances before Tom Cavanaugh disappears from the Flash canvas on a more permanent basis.

The other big story is the changes the team is going through. We've seen every Wells all but disappear, Ralph is off globetrotting with Sue Dearbon, Wally has been on his own solo quest for quite some time, and now the team is going to lose TWO members at the end of this season:  Cisco and Kamilla.  Carlos Valdes is departing the show at the end of this season, and with Chester having been introduced to the team as the new Engineer, we've come to see that Cisco isn't needed anymore, and therefore, it's time for him to move on.  I think this has been on Cisco's mind for quite some time now.  All the travelling he did to get a gauge on this New Earth took him to many places...and simply being stuck in Central City isn't doing it for him anymore.  I think he's tired of the grind of the hero game, and needs to live a normal life.  Kamilla's career as a photographer is taking off, and she feels it's time to spread her wings as well.  So, over the course of the rest of this season, we'll see Cisco and Kamilla take their final bows, and depart Team Flash.  That will leave Barry and Caitlin as the only original OG's of the team left.  And with Bart making his appearance this season, as well as the rumored return of Jessica Parker Kennedy as Nora West-Allen/XS down the road, we're seeing a drastic shift in the Flash family.  As it becomes more closer and closer to the actual West-Allen Family, everyone else on Team Flash will be outliers to the cast.  So, further changes will more than likely come as the season goes on.  We could see Allegra take on a larger role as Flash will need someone out in the field with him, now that Frost is in prison.  It's time for Allegra to step up.
