THE FLASH 8.1

 

RECAP - THE FLASH  8.1:  "Armageddon Part 1"  

Welcome back to Central City, as we gear up for yet another race with The Fastest Man Alive. And while I have had some sense of excitement about a new season of The Flash, this season I was a bit more, because it's the first time we're kicking a season OFF with a crossover event.  And this is a crossover event unlike every other time---this is a five episode even relegated to just ONE show...and that helps, considering the storyline will JUST take place on said program, and NOT deviate to the other shows, thus allowing the guest stars to visit Central City in this case.  They gave us a new threat that will give Team Flash fits for the next few episodes....and with ANY luck...we'll have our "official" formation of the Justice League after this (seriously---it's LOOOOOOONG overdue, CW!).  

This episode showed us quite a bit of change since we last left Barry and Iris renewing their vows at the end of the Godspeed affair.  Life has moved forward, and we got to notice some big changes.  First of all, Iris West-Allen has taken the Central City Citizen from a small newspaper/online outlet to "CC Citizen Media", which now includes her doing podcast interviews with some of the people of Central City and more.  She's taken on more administrative duties, and thus can't be the managing editor anymore.  She's now handed THAT job to a VERY reluctant Allegra, who feels that she can't measure up to what Iris has done, and is bullied and intimidated by the staff writers early on because they're "actual" journalists, and go about finding their OWN stories instead of listening to Allegra.  Iris ends up giving Allegra the pep talk she needs---after welcoming her to management.  She relates the new position to her powering up when she fought against her cousin.  Iris lets her know that her voice is what's made her a good writer, and will make her a better managing editor.  The pep talk worked, and Allegra managed to give the lecture to the writers about what she and Iris expect at CC Media.  It works, and she gets what she wants out of her staff...even if they don't like her.  Iris has become a smaller version of Cat Grant, and it's great to see her career flourish.  

Speaking of Iris, she had a chance to interview returning CCPD Captain Kristin Kramer, as she discusses Kramers decision to end the Metahuman Task Force.  Now being one herself, she's seen a different perspective on things, and just wants to make sure everyone gets a fair shake at the hands of the law.  And has for her and Barry---well, while their adult kids DO come visit from 2049 from time to time, between Barry's time as the Flash, and being at the CCPD, and Iris' time at CC Media, they still haven't been able to conceive yet---and there's still Iris' issue with her illness.  So, not much downtime for our favorite couple.  And now that Kramer is back to work, she's working close with Barry, and that makes him nervous, as her mimic powers can activate around him, and she'd know he's the Flash....which she brings it up during their recent case.  

Speaking of said  case, Barry and Kramer investigate a theft committed by the Royal Flush Gang, who had made a series of robberies in Central City quite a few years back while Barry was in a coma.  But they had stolen a rare microchip, and they wonder why is it they've changed their M.O. from simple bank robberies to theft of tech.  Earlier on, Barry and Caitlin were chatting at Jitters, where Caitlin said she's ready to get back out into the dating world---mostly inspired by Frost's crush on Chillblaine.  They got an alert about two trains about to collide, and manages to save everyone before they crashed.  Back at STAR Labs, the team is trying to figure out what the Royal Flush Gang is up to.  They later find out that therewas a powerful energy source that was aboard the train that the Gang also made off with.  Then, they find out that there's an energy surge at Iron Heights, and the inmates are loose, so Flash races over there to get the prisoners locked back up, and finds out that the Royal Flush Gang used the energy source to "level up" their game.  The team eventually puts their heads together to find out that the Gang plans on using the eneregy source to power up this microchip in order to steal all the cryptocurrency that the casinos in Central City use.  So, Flash meets up with the Gang, and they feel they got him dead to rights.  Queenie, who can see the future, says she knows his moves before he makes them, but that doesn't seem to stop Flash from putting an end to them quickly.  Thing is---she can't think as FAST as Flash...therefore, he's able to make adjustments on the fly before she can read them. So, with the Royal Flush Gang taken care of, the team can focus on other things.

Barry and Iris also got a visit from Ray Palmer, who was in Central City for the tech convention in town, and was looking to shack up at the Allen's while he's here.  Barry had to take off to work, and Iris made sure she made her own beeline for work, as they left Chester in charge of Ray's schedule while he was there.  Chester, however, planned a lot more than what Ray was expecting, as he was thinking that Ray was looking to start up another tech company again, and Ray wasn't.  While he's done being The Atom, and not a Legend anymore, he's just looking to do research, and tinker, and not do anything grandiose---though Chester thought that Ray would sponsor some of the young minds at the event.  So, Chester felt down about that....and proceeded to avoid Ray at all costs for the remainder of the episode.

The huge part of this episode was the arrival of the new villain, Despero.  Despero came from the year 2031, where we saw people running in panic, as Central City was burning to the ground.  Despero shows up at the convention to face off with Flash, and Flash shows up, but is quickly beaten down by Despero, who says he's here to kill him before he destroys Central City in the future.  Ray decides to break his Atom suit out of mothballs to assist our Scarlet Speedster, and actually shrinks Despero down using his belt to end the threat....temporarily.  They know nothing about him, and he said Flash is the one that destroys Central City in the future, and they need help to find out why.  So, because he's an alien, Caitlin goes to call Alex Danvers for her input, and see what will happen there.  Now, everyone knows Barry isn't a supervillain, but Despero seems convinced Barry is.  So, when Despero does return, Barry reveals his secret ID to him, and says that he is not the man Despero thinks he is.  Despero, however, gives Barry 7 days to prove him wrong----or he'll kill him.  

One of the good things to come out of this episode, is during Ray's interview with Iris...he doesn't know what his future is, but he'd like to find out together with the audience in about a year.  He talks to Chester, and says that he created a non-profit organization for young scientists and researchers, and named it in Chester's father's honor.  

This episode was very well done!  I was happy to see a little time jump, and see how everyone has progressed since we last saw them.  Barry and Iris are happy, even though they haven't made a baby yet---but they still have her issues from last season to deal with, which I hope they do eventually.  Barry and Kramer's work dynamic will be interesting to watch further, because I wonder when it will be that she finds out he's The Flash.  Iris turning the Citizen into Catco-lite is awesome, and we now see she has a staff----and to promote Allegra is great too...she needed some more development.  And Caitlin----FINALLY---she won't be a wallflower anymore.  We NEED her to get a life...she's been a part of the show from the beginning, and has essentially STALLED as a character since Ronnie died.  We got no Frost this week, as she's pining over Chillblaine, and Joe was absent----I wonder if we see LESS of him this season?  I hope not---we need Joe to be our father figure, our pillar of strength.  

It was cool to see Chester and Ray interact, and for Ray and Barry to team up.  We know more is to come, but we've missed Ray Palmer since he and Nora left the Legends, but it's cool they gave us an update on his life while he came in.  And Despero looks GREAT!  I like that he changes into the comic book form of his character, and I'm curious to see where his story goes over this mini-series.  And top notch for the writers to bring in new villains like The Royal Flush Gang for Flash to tangle with to keep things fresh.

BATWOMAN 3.5

 

RECAP - BATWOMAN  3.5:  "A Lesson From Professor Pyg"  

Major lessons and revelations permeated throughout this installment of our Scarlet Crusader, as she went and visited dear old Mom for a showdown, and ended up fighting for her life and that of Sophie, Jada, and Marquis in the process.  Meanwhile, just what in the hell is going on with Mary?  She's seemed to have developed a green thumb as well as being able to get her medical license.   And Alice finally gets to the nitty gritty as to just WHY she wanted Alice and Batwoman to work together.  

This episode had Batwoman and Alice on another case, after pulling her away from some bickering with Sophie, who's shacking up there in the interim while she and Batwoman hunt down the Batman villain weapons.  Their investigation leads to a man who was strung up and killed using what seems like Catwoman's whip---which had some fancy nanotech with it.  Her and Alice need to find this person quickly.  

Meanwhile, Ryan herself also has another mission---trying to do as much damage control for Wayne Enterprises as much as possible, since more employees have quit or been fired since Jada pulled her little deal to expose the funds that they use to fund the Bat operation.  Ryan has to meet up with Jada, but Sophie says she's going to, so they get dolled up to get over there.  Mary's trying to reason with Ryan, but she seems to be thirsty....A LOT.  Either way, they're on their way to Jada Jet's home, where they get an icy reception.  And before they left for Jada's, Alice made sure she got some digs in on Sophie about it being a date with Ryan.  Sophie just assures her it's recon.  And...Sophie tells her that Montoya requests her presence at her office pronto. 

So, back at Jada's we meet the chef, who now has to make one more for dinner what with Sophie there as Ryan's date.  But we see that the chef is someone who has an affinity for pigs....Professor Pyg.  So, as dinner is being prepared, Jada and Ryan get right down to it: she wants Ryan to stop associating with her brother or things will get ugly.  Sophie excuses herself to the bathroom, but sneaks upstairs to Jada's office, where she plants a bug that Luke gave her, and then she snoops around a little more, and gets caught by Jada.  The night doesn't get any better, as Marquis shows up with his date, who then psychoanalyzes everyone in the room.  But Ryan tells Jada straight that she's grateful she gave her up, because she's got friends and a family now, and she's the better for it.  

Marquis' date went upstairs to the bathroom, but something's wrong---she can work her fingers, and she can't move her body.  Professor Pyg comes in and kills her.  Everyone else then starts feeling the effects of the spiked wine, and they can't really move.  Professor Pyg then tells Jada he's a chef that she fired from some event some time ago, and because of that---he lost his wife, kids, and everything.  So, now he's out for revenge.  Ryan stabs him, and as he writhes in pain, everyone's making their escape.  They all manage to stumble into Jada's Panic Room.  He says he'll be back.  As Sophie lays a guilt trip on Jada, Marquis starts going into convulsions.  If they don't get him an adrenaline shot soon, he will die.  But it's down in the garage.  Ryan leaves the panic room to go and get it, while Pyg waits the women out.  

While Ryan, Sophie, Jada, and Marquis fight for their lives, Alice talks to Mary, and says that she's been having the hallucinations again, and they're getting worse.  She also hears Mary give her speech about reaping what she sows, and how the seeds of her destruction are bearing bitter fruit.  Alice also notices that Mary's clinic has taken on more of a jungle theme, as their are more plants in the vicinity.  Alice notices a bag with a dead plant in it, and takes it with her.  Anyway, as Alice goes through the files for anyone that's had an opportunity to grab Catwoman's whip.  But there's a file that looks like it's been read a lot.  Alice finally puts it together.  While she says that there's a man running around named Flamingo that was the killer and used a bullwhip, she's more interested in the file on Pamela Isley.  So, Montoya fesses up that her and Pam dated in college, but then she got taken and experimented on...and when that happened,the Pam she remembered died.  Alice then hands her the dead vines, and Montoya says that they don't die unless they infect someone else---and Alice realizes that Mary has been infected, when she earlier noticed Mary needing a lot of water, her constant itching, the plethora of plants in her clinic, and all the plant references she made.  

Back at Jada's mansion, Ryan has made her way to the basement, weak as she is, but the problem is, she can't reach the adrenaline syringes.  They're on top of a shelf, but when she reaches for it, it falls on her.  She can't get to them, and Pyg takes her.  Jada realizes Ryan is going to be killed, so she distracts Pyg long enough for Ryan to inject herself, and then she manages to fight off Pyg long enough for Sophie to inject Marquis and saves his life.  Sophie then tries to help Ryan, but Marquis then goes after Pyg, and kills him by stabbing him to death.  In the aftermath, Sophie knows that Jada is up to something and warns Ryan---but they DO joke about it being an interesting first date.  

Jada reveals that she didn't want Ryan to get to know Marquis, is because of an incident that happened to him when he was younger.  The Joker kidnapped the schoolbus he was on, and zapped him with his joybuzzer.  The effect altered Marquis in strange ways, as we see that Jada had given Ryan tapes of Marquis as a kid....and sees some VERY disturbing things...his fascination with death.  Jada was hoping using Fries' cryogenic chamber and science would put Marquis in suspended animation until they could find a way to cure him.  While Ryan is getting a disturbing revelation about her brother, we see him at home, taking the bloody shirt off, and looking in the mirror....with his bloody hands, and then wipes his lips with it...as if creating a Joker smile.  

They've really turned up the creepy factor on this show---and I love it!  It's really starting to feel like a Batman type show more and more.  With Professor Pyg this week, they did a good job keeping up the psycho factor, honored the character well.  We also learned that there's more to Marquis than meets the eye, and why Jada didn't want Ryan to associate with him---he's unhinged.  And now we understand more as to WHY she wanted to put Marquis in the a deep freeze.  Does this bring Ryan and Jada closer, or does Jada have something else up her sleeve, and Marquis does her dirty work?  Either way, Ryan still hast to be careful.  We're also seeing Sophie's attraction to Ryan getting stronger, and will we see them go on an actual date?  I wouldn't mind---I'm liking them together.  

Alice finally got to the crux as to WHY Montoya had her team up with Batwoman---Poison Ivy.  She's still out there, and now there's a NEW problem:  Alice now knows that the dead vine means that a new person is infected with Ivy's weird plant infection--Mary.  Mary has acted more strange since she's gotten home from Gotham Park.  That little piece of a sticker she pulled out of her arm was the thing that infected her, and now all the plants in her clinic, and the weird speech with all the botany and plant references towards Alice now presents the team with a NEW problem.  Question is:  will they be able to reverse everything happening to Mary before she falls victim of Ivy's plant spell?  Or will Mary start to take on more of Poison Ivy's characteristics?  We know at SOME point, Ivy WILL make her appearance on this show, but we're seeing Mary's decline into madness.  

Another solid show, with some fascinating new developments, and what this does to the dynamic of the team, and the dynamics of the people involved.  This show is picking up steam, and I truly am enjoying where it's going.  It's gotten SO much better since the 1st season, and I think the stability of having Javicia Leslie there as the main character has really helped this show develop and get a better foothold.  I look forward to her first interaction as Batwoman with Flash, and all the other Justice Leaguers (yes, it's the Justice League....let's stop the tease already, CW...just give us what we want).   But more and more...the show has gotten so much better.

DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW 7.5

 

RECAP - DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW  7.5:  "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Scientist"  

It looks like the team has finally made the journey to New York in order to find Dr. Gwyn Davies, and finally get back to 2021.  But you KNOW that it's NEVER going to be quite that easy with this team. And this week, it definitely proved to be true to form.  Meanwhile, the trio of Astra, Gideon, and Spooner continued to try and catch up to their friends before they made their voyage, and get themselves killed.  So, the race was on to catch them before it was too late.

Among the many SNAFU's the Legends have had to endure, this is one that has had more long range ramifications...especially for Sara.  For awhile, the team has kind of played with house money when it came to walking the fine line of messing up history by leaving larger footprints than what they can afford.  This week, it caught up to them. Also, what does the future lie for Nate and Zari?  We had a brief moment with them trying to address their future this week.  

The team made it to New York, and immediately got into some trouble, as a paper vendor took a shot at Sara as he recognized her as a member of the Bullet Blondes.  Sara obviously recovers, but they make their way to where Dr. Gwyn Davies does his work, and Sara bumps into him and manages to grab a bit of his designs for the time machine.  They bring the plans back to Behrad and Zari, where they said it would take years to build the time machine at this rate.  They also have to ensure they leave small footprints as to not disrupt the timeline even more.  Sara tries to reassure Ava about the whole deal

Meanwhile---Astra, Spooner, and Gideon are still trying to reach New York, but they have no money nor transportation.  Astra casts a spell on a rock and says it will bring them good luck.  Spooner believes it works, as they manage to catch a ride with a cross country driver who's nickname is "Cannonball", who's trying to beat his cross country racing record (hence you now get the idea for The Cannonball).  They got their luck to hold up for awhile until they came across a young man on a bike, who then stole the car when they were out of it.  Problem is...Gideon was in the car with the thief.  As for Cannonball himself...he took the bike and bailed on the duo.  

The team then realizes that the problem is that Davies invented a time machine...NOT necessarily time travel.  Especially since now that Sara had to return his original documents, and found his time machine, they needed to get an essential part to make the damn thing work.  So, they go scavenger hunting for this part.  Meanwhile, Sara has to find a way to keep Davies occupied while they find what they need to use his machine.  Gary finds what they're looking for, but bumps into Thomas Edison, whom Davies is working for.  Things go from bad to worse, when Edison finds them all in violation of his rules, and has Davies fired, and committed to Bellvue when he finds out about Davies' time machine.  He also takes the notes Davies had on the subject.  

Back in the pocket universe, Nate and Zari are trying to figure out the Hooverbot, and who it was that sent him.  They also finally have that talk.  Nate says he wants them to live in the pocket realm, since it will allow her to be out of the totem without having Behrad be killed.  She kind of agrees with it, but even the Hooverbot knows she's lying.  They also figure out his programming protocols...one of which is to kill the Legends.  

Sara and the team try to see if the time machine works, and Behrad inserts the part and it starts working...but in all the wrong ways.  Ava disappears and is nowhere to be found.  Sara is freaked out, and realizes that all the little dents they've made in the timeline have no had HUGE consequences.  They need to get the notes back for Davies, because THOSE are the notes they derive the Time book from, and it's Davies that has to activate the time machine in order to keep accordance with history.  So, they have to program the Hooverbot to get the notes from Edison, and Sara must go rescue Davies from Bellvue.  Trailing the team, Astra tells Spooner that she didn't give any good luck to the rock, she just made it look like they had good luck.  They made their own.  Gideon wakes up, and gets rid of the thief, and goes to get her friends.  

Davies takes some convincing, saying that her life wouldn't be as good as it is without Ava, and if he doesn't invent time, she'll have never met her.  So, Davies and her make their escape, whereas the Hooverbot malfunctions and blows up, as Nate and Zari try to get the notes from Edison, but Edison has a heart attack.  But a new Hoover and Edison appear to clean up the real Edison's dead body, and more of history is getting altered further.  They take what parts of the Hooverbot they can and make a hasty retreat with Davies' notes.  

Back at his lab they hit a snag when they find out that the part they need is years away from being built.  But then Zari finds out that part is in the busted Hooverbot.  So, they're ready to travel, while our trio of ladies is still giving chase.  They figure that if they can cause a blackout in the city, it'll cut the electrical power, and they won't be able to travel.  Astra works her magic, and they manage to cut the power out.  Gideon races into the city and she manages to catch up to the team, with Astra and Spooner in tow.  So, with Ava back after fixing what went wrong the first time, the entire team, with Davies, initiate the time machine, and they do make the time travel leap as another Waverider is hot on their heels.  But where they wind up---does NOT look like 2021. 

Well, it took a few episodes, but now the entire team is back together, and they managed to find Davies.  But there's still the issue with the constant Hooverbots on their tail, and the protocol to kill them has been installed.  Now, you have an Edison bot as well, thus complicating matters.  It looks as though Bishop--with current Gideon's reset programming, is there to protect the timeline, but the destruction of the Legends is one of the primary protocols.  And it took some time, but Sara now realizes what Ava was trying to say about leaving smaller footprints in the timeline to prevent disaster.  Once Ava disappeared from time, Sara saw that life without her wouldn't be acceptable.  So, this could be the wake up call the team needs to get serious about resolving their situation.  They need to act fast, because Bishop is hell bent on destroying them.  And I gotta be honest---I'm tired of Bishop.  It's like they couldn't find another villain to develop or bring back that would've provided more of a threat, but let's drag the guy we got rid of at the end of LAST season to be the main villain THIS season.  It tells me they're starting to run out of ideas for these shows.  You run the risk of the show being LESS entertaining, when the same villain they just vanquished is right back to annoying them the following season.  It's frustrating to watch.  

Now, with Nate and Zari---this is couple I want to see.  And, if it's true that she and Nate will spend their time in the totem, what's that due to Nate's contributions to the team?  Is he eventually going to just live with Zari full time, and he's going to take a sabbatical from the team?  Where are they going with this?  Guess we'll find out before the season is out.

It was a decent show, and it's moving along....but I soooooo wish Bishop was a memory.  I'm done with him as a villain, and I didn't want to see him this season, yet here we are.  Either way, we'll see how this all plays out, and hopefully it will be entertaining.  So, that begs the question:  What did all of YOU think about what transpired this episode?  Drop your comments and questions below.

SUPERGIRL 6.19-20

RECAP - SUPERGIRL  6.19:  "The Last Gauntlet"/6.20:  "Kara"  (Series Finale) 

We have finally reached the end of Kara Zor-El's journey....at least what WE get to see of it.  We KNOW the Girl of Steel and the Superfriends will have many, MANY adventures to come...be we will not bear first hand witness to them.  As did Green Arrow did the year before last, and Black Lightning did just this past season, Supergirl departs the Arrowverse's main stage, and allows new heroes to take the spotlight.  As we have seen this season, the Maid of Might has had to battle not just Lex Luthor, but the new 5th Dimensional Imp of Terror - Nyxly.  Now, with Nyxly and Lex working together for total domination, the stakes are high, as they want the totems to join together to gain ultimate power---and they have a bargaining chip:  Esme.  As Esme has become the love totem, it's going to force the Superfriends' hands to get her back.  Can our team of heroes save National City....and the world....one last time?  Let's see how it all ends....

This was the last arc of this (what I believe), lackluster storyline to bring this series to a close.  Esme has been captured by Lex and Nyxly, and they discover the love totem has reconstituted itself into her.  They need to get it out before it reconstitutes again, and Lex is contemplating killing the young girl to get it out, but Nyxly...in a rare show of humanitarianism...won't let Lex kill her.  She needs to earn Esme's trust in order to obtain the totem that way.  Lillian Luthor shows up to warn Lex that Nyxly will betray him, and Lex shuts his mother down, saying that he loves her, but she laughs it off, and says he's incapable of love.  She's always been mistrusting of aliens, and so she also tries to work over Nyxly, but Nyxly is wise to her...but Lillian warns her about Lex, and she takes off.  

The team has discovered William's body, and Andrea has followed his trail there, finding out where the Superfriends' hideout is.  She feels awful because of what SHE did that caused his death.  Andrea truly feels like a monster.  Lena tells her straight up that if she doesn't want to be the monster, then do something about it---change.  Alex is overly distraught, and Lex leaves them a message:  bring all the totems, and meet them where the Omegahedron had exploded...which is a dead area.  They get the totems, and they will return Esme.  But they also need the final totem in order to make the All Stone.  Supergirl must find the final totem, so she goes after it.  She obtains it, but Alex follows her, and wants it.  She says that the ONLY thing that matters is getting Esme back, and if that means giving Lex the totems, so be it.  Kara tries to warn her that this is a bad idea, but Alex doesn't care.  Meanwhile, Brainy is trying to find a way to power up Supergirl by having her absorb solar energy to make her more powerful than the totems, and cancel them out.  Lena warns of the environmental impact this little maneuver will make, but Kara doesn't see any other option.  

Lex has been keeping track of the time, and their almost out of time to get the totem from Esme, so---against Nyxly's wishes, he goes to get the totem the hard way---by killing the girl.  Nyxly manages to stop him, and refuses to let him hurt her.  In her one act of kindness for Esme, and her refusal to Lex to let him hurt a child...she passes the gauntlet and gets the love totem.  She tells Lex to screw himself, and that he's just scum, and ends their partnership.  She grabs Esme to meet Kelly and Alex on a bridge for the exchange.  Lillian returns to gloat to Lex, but he ALWAYS has a plan.  As Supergirl starts absorbing solar energy from the satellite Brainy configured, and she's powering up, the exchange is made on the bridge, and Nyxly assembles the All Stone.  Lex then blows up the bridge to take out all parties and get the All Stone himself.  Supergirl's power absorption is turning the skies red, and she can hear the panic in the streets as the Secretary of Defense is telling her and the team to stop.  Supergirl realizes that this is NOT the way to stop Nyxly and Lex, and tells Brainy to stop. He shuts off the device, and she apologizes to everyone.  She and the team then take off to help Alex and Kelly.  

They join the fight at the bridge, and as the fighting ensues, Esme gets mad and her powers breaks the All Stone apart.  Lex, Nyxly, and Supergirl end up grabbing a piece, and are at a Mexican Standoff.  Within that battle, Lillian is mortally wounded, as she showed up to try and help Lex, but saw Lena using her magic in the fight.  Lex and Nyxly then face off against each other, and their battle starts raging over the city.  And their battle is also sapping the will of everyone in the city, if not the world.  In 72 hours, all the will and hope humanity has will be sucked dry by the two evil villains, as their war continues.  Supergirl has to take time away to think....she is distraught and just doesn't know what to do.  After flying about, she hears Orlando give a passionate speech about fighting back and standing up for yourself. To not give up hope.  Supergirl then knows what she must do.  

Lena visits Lillian, who says that she protected Lena when she was younger by placing talismans about the house to dampen her magic powers, because she didn't want Lena to wind up like Lex.  She did it to protect her, but she knew about Lena's powers the whole time. So...all this time...villain as she was...Lillian turns out to be some semblance of a good mom?  She ends up dying in front of Lena.  Supergirl realizes that she's been trying too hard to be the hero, that it was her job to rescue everyone...but she instead feels that the heroes and the public need to partner up.  So, using Lena's magic to help get people to face up to their fears and find courage and hope, Supergirl broadcasts her message, and it seems to be working, as everyone comes out of their malaise.  

The battle is once again on, as Nyxly and Lex start losing power when everyone starts feeling strong again and having hope.  Lex and Nyxly start conjuring monsters and enemies like Red Tornado, Parasite, and even Overgirl to battle the Superfriends.  Supergirl is saved from Overgirl and Lex by Mon-El, as he and the Legion return to 2021 to help join the fight.  Jimmy also returns as Guardian to pitch in.  Eliza even pitches in to help by destroying some of the creatures conjured up by the evil duo, which brought out the best line of the entire two episodes.  When Alex sees her mom, Eliza comments that "You'd think I was a Kryptonian", to which Alex replied "Only in the movies".  This harkens back to actress Helen Slater's time as Supergirl from the movie.  Either way, the good guys take out the monsters.  And as they're ready for the next wave, Lex opens up a portal to the Phantom Zone.  He says it can't be sealed, and the phantoms come racing out.  However, instead of coming after the people and the heroes...they turn around and attack Lex and Nyxly, and drag them back into the Zone, thus ending the threat once and for all.  It turns out, according to Supergirl, that hubris was the thing that covered for fear---and the phantoms knew that of Nyxly and Lex.  

The team gathers for William's funeral, and it's a somber time for them to remember the sacrifices he made to make the world a better place with his reporting...and for trying to save Esme.  J'onn had talked to the President and Secretary of Defense, and they want to have the DEO re-started.  Brainy isn't sure, and neither is Alex, but Kara says that it's a good idea.  They need to show that they can work WITH the people, not just work outside of them. Mon-El has to head back to the 31st Century, and says his goodbyes to Kara---he will never return to this time ever again.  Brainy has to take his leave of Nia, but he promises her that he will always carry her in his heart.  

We then jump to three weeks later, as Kara is going through the floral arrangement for Alex's wedding, she sees a news report on TV, and they talk about a rescue operation.  She thinks she's needed, but instead, the problem seems to have been solved, thanks to people helping people.  She then gets a call from the long missed Cat Grant.  Cat's on a beach in a wet suit, and tells Kara that she bought Catco back, and she wants to refocus the magazine on actual reporting that matters---so she's offering Kara the job as Editor-In-Chief.  She goes to take off, she'll be back in National City in a couple weeks, and wants Kara to sign the contract she left her.  Alex shows up, and Kara tells her what happened.  Alex is excited for her, but Kara isn't sure.  She says that she allowed herself to get so distracted as Kara Danvers, that it prevented Supergirl from being the best hero she can be.  She feels deflated because everyone else is having their best life....but not her.  Alex assures her that whatever choice she makes will be the right one. 

We jump to the wedding, where Kara and Winn sing a wedding tune.  Jimmy walks his sister down the aisle, and J'onn officiates the ceremony.  Alex and Kelly are finally married, and everyone celebrates.  Nia is then found by Brainy, who said he couldn't live without her.  He also managed to find time to throw a Barry-ism in there:  the future hasn't been written yet.  So, with that in mind, while the threat of the Big Brain being in danger is still an issue, there's time to prevent that from happening.  So, he and Nia can be together.  While the reception continues, Winn, Jimmy, and Kara sit down and talk about the old days, the Supergirl OG team, and how things have changed.  Winn also drops a bomb on J'onn about him and M'gann's children running the DEO in the future.  He also says that Mxy sends his best from the 5th Dimension.  As they go to dance, Kara is called by Cat again, who wonders WHY she hasn't signed her contract.  Kara is stuck, much to Cat's dismay.  Cat says she knows she's Supergirl, and that's why she's held back.  She tells her that she's always known, the glasses never fooled her.  She thinks Kara should become one integrated person...because she'd be able to do so much more if she did....plus, the whole Kara/Supergirl ID crisis is boring.  Kara has much to ponder.  Lena talks to her, and Kara understands why she never passed the courage test:  her biggest fear was coming out as Supergirl, and having to give up who she was in the process.  Lena tells her that she shouldn't hold back...because once Lena stopped holding back on her part, she became the best person she is.  As we have seen, she opened up a new company, Andrea opened up a school in William Dey's name, and Dreamer opened up an LGBTQ outreach center...everyone was living their best life...time for Kara to do that herself.  So, has Lena encourages her to celebrate the wedding....Kara takes off the glasses...and leaves them on the table.  

We get one more final family game night, where Kara thanks everyone for the past six years of adventures, and to the many more they will have.  They all toast, and as we pan outside of Kara's apartment, we see Cat Grant on a big screen, addressing National City, giving an interview to the new Editor-In-Chief, Kara Danvers...whom she introduces as Supergirl...and we finally see Kara Zor-El embrace her true self as the show ends.  

Well....after 126 episodes among 6 seasons, the Girl of Steel leaves our tv screens.  And...I gotta tell you, I only REALLY felt entertained by the last half hour of the final episode.  The whole storyline with the totems and Nyxly wasn't my cup of tea, and didn't really hold my interest like it could've.  And I didn't feel Nyxly really deserved a whole 10 plus episode story arc as the main villain.  It only got MORE watered down by the fact that Lex had to make one more appearance in it to be the OTHER bad guy.  Don't get me wrong....Cryer has breathed new life into this character---but I just felt that he was shoehorned into this story because, honestly, the writers had no real direction for it, and Nyxly alone didn't generate enough heat for a villain.  Now, I thought Peta Sergeant did a good job with developing Nyxly, and breathing life into this villain...but I just didn't get into her as a huge "big bad".  So, for me, the last huge arc of this season was about totems, and using them to form a stone that can control all of the universe---so, it's like the Infinity Stones Thanos was searching for in the Avengers movies....just not that good.  I was surprised that they decided to kill off Lillian Luthor, but I think HER death was the final push needed to get Lena to be HER full self...especially since Lillian told her that she knew the truth about her magic powers, and her biological mother.  So, in HER last act, Lillian showed that she was, indeed, something of a loving, caring mother.  

To me, the other problem was these last two episodes...some of the scientific superhero speak and plot points felt nonsensical, and inconsistent.  It's as if the writers were just out of gas creatively at this point, and they just wanted to push the series across the finish line.  And I think that the series suffered from this the whole season.  Blame COVID or not, it threw all the plans into a tailspin, and they had to do serious re-writes to get this season moving.  Plus, with Melissa Benoist now a new mother, her time is now being diverted to parenthood, and probably scaling back on network TV for the time being.  So, they had to try and cram a story that they felt would be worthwhile in order to get this last season in.  I am not sure it needed a 20 episode slate...I think they could've wrapped it up in half the time.  Arrow's last season was only 10 episodes...most of which they spent on giving fan service by bringing back elements of the past before Ollie had finally met his demise. So, with this extra length, I don't think they did themselves any favors.  

The last half hour DID bring us the Legion, though they really didn't DO much, but give us a Mon-El appearance, as well as a returning Winn.  Plus, throw in Jimmy Olsen, and we got to fanboy and fangirl out.  For ME, though, was the return of Cat Grant.  The series to ME, wouldn't be complete without HER return, even if only for a scene or two.  What we got was great satisfaction to me----she got her company back, promoted Kara, and kicked Kara in the ass to get her to see that she didn't need a dual ID to make a difference.  It allowed Kara to finally embrace herself, and step out into this world a more confident woman and hero.  After all, look at the changes to Lena from the time the episode started...Lillian's death, and her look at the wedding.  Only thing missing from Lena there were vampire fangs and a black cape.  They totally went goth with the woman.  She looked like Fairuza Balk from The Craft. 

That brings me to my other point I want to make.  I know for the last few years, there were MANY people who felt that Kara and Lena should've been THE couple on this show----but, folks, I gotta tell you something---was NEVER going to happen.  First and foremost---Kara admitted WAAAAAY back in the pilot episode that she was NOT gay to Winn.  I seriously doubt in the 6 years we've watched Kara Zor-El, that any of that changed.  I think that so many (and a good chunk in and in support of the LGBTQ audience), felt it was obvious they were in love.  I guess my eyes saw something differently:  that you could have two strong, powerful, successful women be JUST best friends....bordering on sisterhood.  I never saw a romance angle from either of them, and considering the baggage they brought to the table and the amount of mistrust from last season----no.  Now, I know many will say that "Yeah, but things change, and it was just SOOOO obvious that they were into each other".  That's what you were hoping for.  But it never would've properly served THE STORY, people.  You can fanfiction these two to your heart's desire---but they were NEVER becoming a couple.  And before anyone hops on their soapbox about representation for minorities...you HAD a LGBTQ couple on this show with Alex and Kelly....you had the first trans heroine in Dreamer...plus...you look at a powerful businesswoman like Andrea Rojas...Kelly and Jimmy themselves, and J'onn...M'gann, and many others.  There was good chunk of representation all the way around on this show.  If the relationship doesn't serve the overall STORY, then it's just shoehorning it in for fanservice...and that's a DISSERVICE to the characters and the writers.  So....you can dream and fantasize all you want.  But they're friends...leave it at that. 

Either way, I am going to miss Supergirl.  She often times was a bright spot, without getting overly too heavy on the drama and topics, but the last couple seasons saw them tackle some tough issues, and at times they got just a tad too preachy, and that can turn off audiences.  But for the most part, it was wonderful to watch the Girl of Steel in action for 6 years, and it's hard to say goodbye to yet another Arrowverse show...as 3 have now left the air (yes, I consider Black Lightning an Arrowverse show, though he never really interacted with any other characters on HIS show).  The Flash continues to be the elder statesman show, with Legends now taking over as the "little brother" show.  So, we bid farewell to another member of the Arrowverse "Big Three", as Kara Zor-El takes her final bow.
