RECAP - BATWOMAN 3.3: "Freeze"
We a quite a few things go down this week in Gotham City. As the team is still on a quest to retrieve another Bat villain weapon, we have Alice having more hallucinations, and continue her mind games with the team, as well as Ryan laying down the truth on Jada Jet---that she is her daughter. How did that go down? So what chilling surprises await us? Let's get down to it....
This week, we saw the Bat team have to deal with the threat of a Bat villain weapon with an icy past: Victor Fries. A canister of liquid nitrogen that Victor had used in his crimes as Mr. Freeze, and to help his wife Nora had gotten into the hands of some kids, where a bus was frozen, and the news picked it up. Luke then fills Mary and Ryan on Mr. Freeze, his crimes, and the fact that his wife, Nora, was put in cryogenic sleep to slow down the progression of MacGregor's Syndrome until he found a cure. Not too long ago, they did find a cure, and released her from her cryogenic sleep. But being in suspended animation for 20 years was a shock to Nora, as her husband had long been dead. She was put into Arkham, but she escaped not long ago, and has been in hiding ever since. They trace the canister's whereabouts to the GCPD. Once Batwoman gets there, however, it turns out that the canister is missing. It was stolen by a woman named Dee.
When we meet Dee, we see her meet up with an older woman, who turns out to be Nora Fries herself. It turns out she's aged rapidly since coming out of her cryogenic sleep. She's not doing well, healthwise, and the only way it seems to save her is to put her BACK into the cryogenic chamber. That chamber, as Luke informs Batwoman, is at a place called Ace Chemicals. While Nora and Dee talk about Victor and the nitrogen, a gang breaks into their abode and kidnaps them. This group takes them hostage to Ace Chemicals, where the leader of the gang wants the women to tell them how Fries' cryogenic chamber works. Nora says the chamber doesn't work without the liquid nitrogen. Batwoman arrives, and manages to fight off some of the gang, and get Nora to escape, and tells her to go to Dr. Hamilton. Batwoman falls to the numbers game, as she's conked out from behind. When she awakes, she's in the cryo chamber, and the gang wants to see it work---their benefactor wants to know the chamber is in working order---so they're going to use it on Batwoman. Dee says that without the liquid nitrogen canister, Batwoman will die. That's fine with the gang leader.....if Batwoman doesn't die...Dee will.
Luke notices that Batwoman's going into hypothermia as the chamber continues to drop in temp, and the Scarlet Crusader is fading fast. She needs Luke to suit up to save Dee, and he's off. Now...Sophie does show up at the cave to try and save Batwoman, as she slowly starts to fall asleep and the hypothermia begins to take over. Sophie does what she can to keep Batwoman awake by feining anger towards her for not confiding in her about meeting Jada, and confessing she was her daughter....and she did the dirty work to find her, and didn't confide in her. The tactic works, as Batwing invades the plant, and manages to take down some of the gang members, and rescue Batwoman. Once Batwoman recovers, her and Batwing are chasing down the gang, who has Dee. As the gang tries to make their escape, the gangleader uses a bomb to blow up part of the bridge. Using part of the liquid nitrogen canister to freeze part of the bridge to give the Batmobile something to drive on. Batwoman makes it across, and the gang eventually tosses Dee, but keeps Victor's notes, and takes off.
While Batwoman was in a deep freeze and Batwing and Sophie were trying to rescue her, Alice was up to her usual games, this time focusing on her step-sister. Alice fakes being sick, and Mary does give her a checkup...which turns up nothing. Alice says she notices that Mary looks at Luke, and Mary tries to play it off, but Alice has eyes. She also begins to toy with Mary's insecurities, saying that she should know her role on the team: she's only noticed when they actually NEED her. Alice also wanted Mary to get the nanobots out of her system, but Mary can't. All Alice wants to do is be free. She takes Nora at knife point, and Nora wants her to kill her. Nora says that she woke up 20 years later, and started aging rapidly...and she doesn't have much time left. She's tired, and is ready to die. Alice doesn't find the fun in it, and storms off. Nora says she can understand Alice's plight----trapped with seemingly no escape...and that's all she wants to do.
Ryan's day also began with a meeting between her and her mother, Jada Jet. At first, she was impressed with Ryan, but finding out she's the daughter she gave up makes Jada upset, and doesn't want anything to do with her. The tension between the two gets eased when Marquis Jet arrives and introduces himself. Jada introduces him as her son. And she makes it clear that if Ryan crosses her path again, it'll get ugly. Later on, Marquis pays a visit to Ryan, and wants to get to know his sister...and feels that his mother doesn't appreciate his business acumen, and believes that he and Ryan should team up against dear old Mom and show her what they're worth. Ryan says she'd think about it. When she later talks to Sophie about it, she says that as much as she wants a family....the team comes first.
Once the mission was accomplished, Mary fesses up to Ryan that Luke disabled the safety measures on the suit---because he isn't over the shooting psychologically. Ryan wants Luke to tell her if he's fine---he says he is, and Ryan says that she needs Luke in the field until they get the rest of the weapons. Mary feels like she's not being heard and walks off. Mary tries to apologize, but Luke isn't happy with her.
Alice is once again sent back to Arkham, where her frears of the nanobots in her body are crawling about, and she can see and feel them are driving her even more paranoid.
Mary gives Nora some medication to help ease her pain, and make her more comfortable for whatever time she has left. Dee doesn't want her to die, but Nora says she's been doing that for awhile. She just wants to spend time with her sister with what time she has left. Mary says Batwoman ensured that no one is looking for them. Mary then walks off, but turns back to look at them once again, until a certain vine crawls into the park from the bushes, grabs Mary by the feet, and drags her back into the bushes.
This was a pretty good episode. I still was amazed at the fact they went the early route to have Ryan tell Jada she's her daughter. Now, the animosity between Jada and the child she abandoned gets more tense. And as for Marqius----sure, he's a bit of a sweet talker, but we know he's trying to play ALL the angles....but I have no doubt he's still loyal to Mommy Dearest. We'll see how much Jada decides to start going after Wayne Enterprises, and teach her daughter a "lesson". And I feel Marqius is the key.
Alice seems more paranoid that usual...as the nanobots in her system are making her even crazier, and she may NOT be hallucinating as much as we think she is. But we'll have to see how THAT develops down the road. But we also know she's continuing to be the same Alice we know her to be: maipulative, crafty, and sadistic. This time, she picks on her dear old sister...knowing she's the easy mark. While Mary is a legit doctor, and the doctor on the Bat Team...just what exactly IS her role on that team? What does she contribute, and how much of her actual input is valued? It's these doubts that Alice implants in Mary's head, that will cast some doubt as to her own value on the team. And now with Ivy's vine having captured her...is Pamela Isley not far behind?
And it looks like Sophie and Ryan are garnering some chemistry. They've seem to have gotten over their earlier hangups, and have found a good working relationship...but is there room for more? Batwing comments on the banter that Ryan and Sophie have with each other, and he wonders whether or not Ryan is flirting with her? Neither of them really admit to anything, and Sophie tries to keep them on mission...but it looks like Sophie has begun to earn more of Sophie's trust and vice versa. It will be interesting to see what happens between these two going forward.
As for Nora Fries---we get to see something of a bittersweet ending for her---as her time on this world is cut short because of MacGregor's Syndrome, she just wants to die. She has accepted her fate, as much as her sister Dee doesn't want it. She just wants to be free of this life of strife and pain---and get away from the confinement she was in for 20 years, and her subsequen lockup in Arkham.
