RECAP - SUPERGIRL 6.17: "I Believe In A Thing Called Love"
We got a look at Nyxly's surprise benefactor last week, when we got the return of Lex Luthor to the canvas, as the Girl of Steel hasn't had enough problems dealing with Nyxly as it is, but now throwing in Lex just exacerbates the problem. So, with 4 totems left to obtain, the Superfriends now have to work overtime to locate them, and beat Nyxly to the punch. We're a few episodes away from the end, so let's see what transpired this week...
It was all about love this week. The love totem was what everyone was after, and Lex offers his services to Nyxly to help her achieve it, but she's apprehensive about him, because she feels she can get it herself. Because of his time in the future, Lex feels that his insight would be beneficial to her, but she blows him off, citing the fact she doesn't trust him. Lex expresses his feelings towards Nyxly to Otis, who's been standing in Lex's stead since he left for the future. Lex actually admits his feelings to Otis in regards to Nyxly. He admits that no one in his life has been his equal as Nyxly was...and that's how he fell in love with her.
As for things on the Superfriends' side---Alex and Esme are trying to plan an engagement party for her and Kelly, to celebrate the moment they both fell in love with each other. It's also a plan for Alex to finally propose to Kelly as well. However, the bar she booked for the event has already been booked, and she's heartbroken about it. Meanwhile, Supergirl has a plan to draw Nyxly out by using Lena's magic to create an artificial love totem, and place a trap for her. The trap works, and they fight Nyxly, and they have her captured and ready to be contained, but Lex arrives, blasts everyone with a Kryptonite beam, thus knocking the Girl of Steel out of the fight, and they make good their escape. Nyxly wonders how Lex knew where she was, and she ends up seeing his microscopic drone. He does manage to convince her that they were quite a team in the future. She got her revenge and more. But what Lex did NOT tell her, and only told Otis---that she died in the future, and he is there to prevent it.
Brainy is distraught because Lex used 31st Century tech against them, and if the can adapt that for Nyxly, they'll be unstoppable. He can contact the Legion, but fears doing so for changing the timeline, and destroying the space/time continuum. Nia encourages Briany to contact them, because times are desperate. He still feels that using the actual totems would be more effective, but Supergirl feels there's a huge risk. So, they try to work on an artificial energy source. J'onn then offers to take the gauntlet test instead of Kara, because he knows the moment when he faced his worst fear. So, into his memories he goes, and endures the pain of losing his family....but he passes the test. They now have another totem to use against Nyxly and Lex. Both Nyxly and Lex have discovered where the love totem is, as have the Superfriends: Portugal. Both sides race to the totem, and a fight ensues. Supergirl is in her battlesuit, but she gets blasted by Nyxly, and her nightmares about Phantom Zone Phantoms freeze her in place, and she's helpless. As J'onn and the others try to use the totems to take out Nyxly and Lex,, she goes for the love totem, but it disappears. Mitch manages to beam Lex and Nyxly out before anymore damage is done. However, it looks as though the love totem has been destroyed by turning black, and J'onn couldn't help it. Lex is chided by Nyxly for not grabbing the totem before saving her. She's never had anyone sacrifice for her before. Not only has he been able to heal her, but help protect her crystal ball. Lex finally expresses to her about how he feels. He says that no one has ever been his equal except her. She begins to see the potential of their alliance, and be friends.
Alex tells Kelly she's bummed she couldn't book the bar, but it turns out Kelly did. Too bad they couldn't have their surprise there, but Kelly understands, she's just happy she's with Alex. Alex then finally proposes to Kelly, and she says yes. So, as the team celebrates, Brainy is concerned about Lex's behavior, and Nia tells him to trust his instincts...find out what the Legion knows...anything that can help will be beneficial at this point.
Andrea finds out that Lex is involved with Nyxly, and wants William to get the story to put them back on top, and William says he will write the story his way, and get the facts...not sensationalize it. Andrea gives him until midnight to provide the facts, but he fails to meet her deadline, so she goes into business for herself, suiting up in her shadow suit, and going into Lex's office...finding a notebook of his with some interesting info. We then see William meeting up with his secret source---Otis Graves.
As the team continues to celebrate, and Lex and Nyxly wonder about the love totem, Lex says the power flows into something else...and reconstitutes. They'll find the totem, and possess it. What we see at the end of the episode is Alex and Kelly reading with Esme...as the love totem power has now flowed into the little girl.
Well, things have gotten a tad more predictable with Lex on the scene, but it is interesting to see him smitten with Nyxly, and go out of his way for her. But as things wind down for this show, we're going to see a mad dash for the other totems, which I believe Nyxly will get with Lex's help. And we'll have that point where all looks lost. But with this love totem, we know that Lex and Nyxly will find a way to nab Esme, and use her to stop the Superfriends, thus putting Alex and Kelly in a panic. As for Kara....she has GOT to move past the Phantom nightmare stuff....it's gotten to be too much.
I wonder if we'll get ANY appearances from Winn, Mon-El, or the rest of the Legion when Brainy does contact them? It would be nice to get an appearance from THEM before the show signs off. And are they serious in the fact that OTIS is William's source? How crazy is that? Is Otis smarter than he lets on? And as for Andrea...just what did she find in Lex's office when it comes to that notebook? So, we have a couple more mysteries coming up before it's over, so we'll see how all THIS plays out.
