SUPERGIRL 6.1

RECAP - SUPERGIRL  6.1:  "Rebirth"

Well, folks....here it is.  The final flight of the Girl of Steel.  It's been a fun and interesting 5 seasons from our Superfriends and the Maid of Might, but now we are in the final lap of her journey, and it starts where we last left off:  with Luthor now gaining control of Leviathan, and leaving Brainiac to die at the Leviathan compound, with Dreamer to rescue him, the rest of the team now has to find a way to stop Lex before he takes over the Earth...with Lillian in tow.  Now, with having shut down Obsidian, the team is in a desperate race to end the threat of the Greatest Criminal Mind on Earth before it's too late.

I will say this about Jon Cryer:  he embodies EVERYTHING we love to hate about Lex Luthor:  cocky, arrogant, intelligent, cunning, sinister, and overbearing.  As he comes out of the chamber having been imbued with the powers of Leviathan, he comes out feeling invincible.  Especially with his Kryptonite wrist blaster.  As Lillian watches Lex get used to his new powers, his plans are of no small thing.  He intends to do what the Anti-Monitor couldn't...destroy everything, and make it into his own image.  Lex has always been a guy who thinks on a grand scale, and sees the faults in the plans of others.  He's always one step ahead for the most part.  But, as Lillian points out to him SEVERAL times....his weakness has ALWAYS been Kryptonians.  Lex has NEVER believed that the world's saviors should be aliens from another planet.  Of course, he doesn't feel it should be ANY super powered individual OTHER than himself.  So, aside from trying to improve upon---and actually SUCCEED---at improving upon the Anti-Monitor's plan, he also had a backup plan implanted in Obsidian whereas a certain aspect of the world's population would still be on Lex's side, and support him.  Whereas those that AREN'T in tune with Lex's grand vision....will be killed.  Though Lillian WASN'T one of the "enlightened" ones...she's on board with his vision...but she INSISTS that he spare Lena...that's family.  Honestly, I don't think Lex cares for Lena in ANY capacity, and I'm amazed that he even cares about Lillian.

While Lex is ready to execute his master plan, we have the Superfriends managing to rescue Brainy from the Leviathan compound by being able to destroy it.  They  congregate back at The Tower, where they figure out what Lex's ultimate plan is.  Andrea has fessed up everything that SHE has done to William, and we'll discuss HER story in a bit.  But they realize that in order to stop Lex, they'll need Myriad, and that both J'onn and M'Gann need to see if they can use an old Martian ritual to help destroy the satellites.  Of course, for J'onn, he's uncertain about the ritual, because it means opening himself up completely to M'gann.  Alex assures him that whatever happens, it could actually be a GOOD thing.  Meanwhile, the team plans on going to the Fortress of Solitude to grab Myriad, and, as Kara has a card to play in her hand, offers herself to Lex in order to save the people of the world.  Lex is intrigued, even though Lillian tells him it's a trap.  Lex is aware, but the thought of FINALLY killing Supergirl is just too good an offer to pass up.  Once they DO meet at the Fortress, Lex catches Kara leaving a farewell message---just on the chance she dies this day.  He doesn't hesitate to lay the Kryptonite on her.  Just in time to also lend a helping hand is the Superfriends.  However, Lex was prepared for them, and ends up taking them all out, as well as Supergirl.  Before the team landed at the Fortress, Nia and Brainy talk about his mistakes in betraying the group.  He knows he has to earn their trust again, but before Nia leaves, he gives her his Legion Flight Ring.

J'onn and M'gann are in space, looking to take out the satellites, while Dreamer and Alex go for the canister that contains Leviathan within it from Lillian.  They run into Otis and Lillian, and manage to defeat them, but not before Otis and Lillian make their escape.  With the Leviathan canister in hand, they head to the Fortress to take out Lex, and render him mortal.  Before they can finally execute the plan, we see Lex singing to Queen's "We Are the Champions", while destroying the weapons that have been stored at the Fortress.  They battle ensues, and while he manages to take them out....it's temporary.  They fight back.  And, their plan manages to work, as they render Lex mortal again.  Supergirl recovers thanks to Lena's Supergirl armor.  But not everything turns out well in the end, however.  In the wake of the battle, Lex managed to use the Phantom Zone projector to zap Supergirl into the prison dimension.  J'onn and M'gann fly to Mars to talk to his brother, and find out if there's a way to rescue Kara quickly.  Unfortunately, they're not able to get the answer they want...since they can't pinpoint Kara's location there to get her back.

While the battle at the Fortress was going on, Lena and Brainy were working on activating Myriad, and Lena ended up giving Brainy a heart-to-heart about his actions, by talking about her own mistakes.  They both know they have a ways to go, but they are both willing to find a way.  After the battle and Kara's disappearance, we see that Lena got to punch Lex before he was taken to prison for threatening to expose Kara's ID as Supergirl, and that she and Alex got to share a moment, where Alex was worried about telling Kelly about Kara being Supergirl.  Lena tells her to let her know...she knows that keeping secrets can do damage.  But she knows they will all be there for her, trying to find a way to bring Kara back.  It's also official that Alex gets a superhero name:  Sentinel.  She's an official Superfriend now.  Nia and Brainy make up, and she let's him know that she doesn't need protecting.  They have a ways to go, but they're off to a good start.  Lena pays a visit to her mother and Lex in jail, and uses Myriad to wipe their minds of Supergirl's secret ID.

Andrea, who had decided to fess up everything to William Dey for his story, was ousted by her father, who said she brought shame to the family.  Kelly, of all people, assured her that she can do anything...because she built up Obsidian and CatCo through sheer force of will.  So, with that, she uses her powers to make sure that her father buys all the stock she had, and ensures that he goes down with the ship.  She DOES, however, keep CatCo, and turns over a new leaf---to be a legitimate paper.  William scores the big story, and she says that they will be an honest paper.  Nia tells William that Kara is on a story with Cat Grant, and will return when she's done, to which Andrea says she looks forward to it.

Our show, however, gives us the bad tidings as we see Supergirl unconscious in the Phantom Zone....with several of the inhabitants closing in on her.

This final season started off with a bang, and hit the ground running.  Unlike The Flash, they wrapped up the previous season's  storyline in one episode.  By taking down Lex, and getting HIM off the board, the focus can NOW shift to a new chapter:  the search for Supergirl.  And we know this is going to be a team effort, as they will not only trying to search for a way to get Kara back home....but they'll have to ALL step up to protect National City in the process.  J'onn will be leading that charge, as well as Alex.  But I expect Nia to have an even larger role, taking on something of a leadership role herself.  And Lena will be there as well.  And while her and Kara were ready to rebuild THEIR friendship...what will happen with her family.  Does she still have SOME loyalty to the Luthor name?  Or will she finally break away from Lillian and Lex, and establish herself again?  And what of Alex?  She's an official member of the team now as far as being a superhero goes....but how will Kelly react when Alex finally tells her that Kara and Supergirl are one in the same?  Or will Kelly herself have figured that out on her own?  And Andrea....will her and William be the stalwarts of this revitalized Catco?  And will we EVER get an actual Cat Grant appearance again?

Lots of questions, and a full season to answer them.  And I'm sure the surprises aren't done yet before Supergirl flies off for good.  But I DO like that they hit the gound on a good note this season, and expect more of the same as we move on through this final 20-something episodes.  What did YOU like about this final season premiere?  Subscribe and let me know.

Until next time....Up, up, and away!
