RECAP - SUPERGIRL 6.2: "A Few Good Women"
The Quest to rescue Supergirl begins! As Kara Zor-El is trapped in the Phantom Zone after the battle with Lex Luthor, the Superfriends pull their collective efforts to find a way to get the Maid of Might OUT of the Phantom Zone before it's too late, and gain some assistance from another alien who'd been trapped in there before, while Kara herself gets quite the shock when she wakes up in the Zone. Meanwhile, the trial of Lex Luthor begins, with Eve Tessmacher as the star witness. Watching the proceedings is not only Andrea Rojas, who has sent William and Nia Nall to cover the trial for Catco, but Lena as well. So....what shook out in the aftermath of all this? Let's find out.....
Frustration is something that is felt on all sides this episode, as the Superfriends feel the brunt of that frustration by struggling to find a way to rescue Supergirl from the Phantom Zone---enlisting the aid of a vampire alien named Silas, who'd been raiding a blood bank at the time---to help them find a way to track and remove Supergirl from the Zone. He had been in there before, and had lost his boyfriend Owen. He's scared to death of the Phantoms, and does NOT want to relive the experience, but they convince him to give it a shot. So, he manages to work it so that they can open a portal into the Zone....but the problem is, since CRISIS---the Zone has gotten fractured, and it makes it nearly impossible for them to just pull Supergirl out. Brainy---who had been training Nia to astral project into the zone---has been trying to map the Zone out, but now it's going to take some time. The team is feeling down....especially J'onn and Alex, as BOTH of them show immense impatience because they can't get Kara out. M'gann tries to get J'onn to think more like a soldier, and not so much like a father. We see, though, that he'll take that mindset a little TOO literally, and may backfire in the process. As for Alex---she is suffering because she feels helpless and lost without her sister. Kelly does what she can to reassure her, but Alex is at her lowest right now. Dreamer herself feels the frustration, what with not being able to really use her powers to do what Brainy asks her to do, and feels she needs her sister or mother for assistance.
Things go from bad to worse, as the Superfriends have to fight off an attack from a few Phantoms who escaped the zone onto Earth, and they managed to fight them back in....except for one. That one managed to change into a mist, and allowed himself to get sucked into Silas. He then later releases himself from Silas, and attacks at the end of the episode. Nerves are raw with the team, and the fact that it's going to now take longer than anticipated to pull Kara out. With a city to protect in her absence, it just makes it more difficult when their minds are NOT totally in the game, because their confidence and morale is low.
As for the Girl of Steel herself, she wakes up to have to fight off the Phantoms from effecting her mind and killing her, to meet up with another person trapped in the zone. In what turns out to be a HUGE shock for all of us---the man Kara meets is none other than her father, Zor-El. Zor-El has apparently been trapped in the Zone for years, and informs her that the only reason he hasn't gone insane, or been killed by the Phantoms, is because he's settled into the Zone, and hasn't tried to find a way out. He urges Kara to do that same. But we know our heroine, and she has no quit in her. She DOES try to make her way out and find an escape, only to be attacked, and saved by her father. Again, despite his warnings, Kara tells him that she is going to find a way out. Her father FINALLY gets on board, and the begin to find out a way to escape. They do see that the Phantoms are able to escape through a portal, and believe THAT is the way out. It was quite the surprise to see Zor-El alive and well in the Zone. It will also be interesting to see he and Kara work together to escape. It also makes me wonder about the future and the end of the season. Will we get to see Kara's parents reunite? And will she decide to stay on Argo to reconnect? It raises some interesting questions down the road. But right now---let's see how they can escape.
Our other major story this episode focused on the trail of Lex Luthor. With a jury participating virtually, and Lex defending himself...he made sure he had a plan in place just in case they had a conviction count ready to levy against him. The star witness was Eve Tessmacher. Andra Rojas wanted William Dey and Nia Nall around the courthouse to get the scoop, and she wanted to ensure Lex was painted in the MOST negative way as possible. She also tried to get to Lena for a story, and wonder WHY she isn't testifying, but Lena rebuffs her, because she was hoping Andrea was there as a friend. Lex ends up destroying Eve's testimony by pointing out HER part in all his schemes, and paints her as a jilted lover. The jury takes this to mind, and while the world is watching, Lena takes it upon herself to go and testify, because she knows she can get under Lex's skin as much as he does hers. And while he does his best to paint Lena in the worst possible light, he also allows his ego to get the better of him as well. He DOES end up showing his true colors, and does admit to his own wrongdoing....BUT....he manages to twist it enough in his own favor, that the jury ends up finding him innocent, and he's acquitted of all charges. Lex is a free man, and now Lena will be under investigation for her part in his machinations. It DOES kind of suck that Lex does NOT get his come-uppance, and he'll STILL find a way to manipulate people...but it also shows just how much Lex keeps one step ahead of everyone else.
The episode wasn't bad---had some decent emotional beats in it. Kara finding her father was a HUGE surprise, because we never really knew what happened to him, and I can't recall ever getting an explanation to his disappearance. Lex being acquitted isn't a surprise, but it also keeps him around a little longer, and THAT is a problem. Lex being around for as long as he has is starting to wear a bit thin. I LOVE what Cryer's done, and I LOVE the character---but he's been driven down our throats for the better part of TWO YEARS now....and it's time for him to go away. Sadly, I feel they will drag Lex out the entire season, and won't have ANY resolution until the end of the series. I just wish COVID wasn't an issue, and we could have Superman show up or something. But this is where we are, and it worries me that the writers are keeping a character who's HAD his time in the spotlight remain there for longer than he needed. I worry that the show is just going to tread water to the finish line, and keep Lex as the main baddie until the end. It takes away from having a truly epic final season, and sending Kara off on a high note. So...that being said, it was still a pretty decent episode.
