RECAP - DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW 6.2: "Meat: The Legends"
I'll say this when it comes to our Merry Band of Time-Travelling Misfits - they know how to turn on the YUCK level. And after THIS week's installment---I'll NEVER want any secret or special sauce on my hamburger again. As they continue the hunt for Sara, they also have to deal with the various aliens that fell out of Gary's ship, and splashed into the time stream. And it's with these aliens that the team feels can lead them to eventually finding Sara herself. And speaking of Captain Lance and Gary, they crash land on a planet after just missing the wormhole. Their situation does NOT look like it's improved much, either.
With Sara still missing, the team is trying to figure out how to find her, and with all of these aliens now permeating the timestream at various points, and having Gary's ex hit the Waverider like a fly on a windshield, thus losing a chance to ask HER about it, they get a hit about an alien that's fallen into San Bernardino, California (my old stomping grounds), 1955 - where the fast food industry took off, they discover that there's a pandemic going around, where the citizens of the city are overcome with this compulsive obsession for eating meat. They discover the crux of the problem when they arrive at a fast food joint called "Big Bang Burger". They need to find where the alien presence is, and this is where Ava turns to Spooner for help, but she's resistant to doing it, because it's not something she signed up for, but she's getting a hit as to where the alien presence might be. Mick is listening to the police band, picking up their call-signs for crimes in the immediate area. He steals the cop car as everyone is engorging on burgers. He grabs Ava, Spooner, and John, as they head out to check a grocery store and a butcher as to where the hints of other riots involving meat have occurred. Meanwhile, Nate, Zari, and Behrad keep tabs on the burger place, and eventually get jobs there in order to blend in, and try to discover where the alien is that's causing this fanaticism.
Ava's team arrives at the butcher, and Spooner gets an alien tingling, and they come across a young man in an alien costume, which Spooner automatically assumes is an alien hidden behind a human mask, hidden behind an alien one. They take the kid back to the Waverider to question him, and Spooner gets a tingle again, but it's after the kid coughs up the secret sauce that was on the burgers thanks to John's spell. They realize that the sauce IS the alien, and Ava orders Nate, Zari, and Behrad to stop selling burgers with the sauce...it's causing everyone to eat more meat, and start attacking each other. Ava really needs more of Spooner's help, but all she wants is the implant in her head out, so she can lead a normal life. Gideon says that's impossible, because there ISN'T an implant in her head. This leads me to consider the fact that Spooner is a methahuman. As for the trio at the burger joint, Behrad was getting into his zen cooking burgers since he was a pro at it before, and it's where he felt more like himself instead of being the brother to the Dragon Girl (Zari). Zari points out that he's been hogging the totem as of late, and he denies it. They argue until they get the call from Ava to shut the burger place down. Once they stop serving, the customers come back, and begin attacking...thus forcing them and the owner to lock everything down while they collect all of the secret sauce...which, they find out from the owner that his wife made it.
Ava and the team pay a visit to the owner's wife, Rhonda, as she's at home cooking. Ava questions her about the sauce, and she says that she just used rice vinegar to make the sauce appealing. Meanwhile, Spooner gets yet ANOTHER tingle, and she and John notice a pod that been stashed in the shed of the house. Spooner realizes that she can read it, and she knows it's alien. They let Ava know, as she excused herself, and made her way upstairs, trying to find out where the sauce came from, since she saw some dripping from the ceiling before she left. As she's about to tell John and Spooner what she found, which was a cocoon, which had the sauce dripping from it, she's knocked out by Rhonda. She awakes, as Rhonda tells the story about how the burger joint was failing, and it was effecting her marriage. She then said that she saw the dripping from the ceiling, and before she could warn her husband, he took a bite of his steak with it, loved it, and they've used it for the business ever since. Ava tries to reason with her that it's an alien, and will kill the town, Rhonda refuses, and says that she plans on franchising using the sauce, and won't give up the alien, as it had gotten bigger. Soon, the cocoon breaks open, and a giant Mothra-type creature emerges, and eventually eats Rhonda. It then takes off...headed for the burger joint, ready to feast upon the citizens.
Ava calls ahead to the B-team, and Behrad and Zari put their heads together, and realize that to stop the angry crowd, they need to lace the burgers with her tea herbs that she uses to mellow herself out. The plan works, and the crowd is sedated...just in time, because they needed to get the people inside the restaurant before the giant moth comes in to feast upon the people. Ava, Spooner, John, and Mick arrive, just in time to see the owner of the burger joint get eaten himself. Spooner finally gets to use her special gun, and fires it at the alien, watching it hit the burger sign, and get electrocuted. The threat is ended and the team takes the crispy bugger back to the ship to see if it will help them lead them back to Sara. They all see the news report that the waitress from the burger joint planned on reopening it under a new name: Big Belly Burger.
Later on, Spooner and Ava chat, and Ava wants to find Sara, and Spooner has a chance to take down some aliens...mostly because of the fact this is how she lost her mother. So, with an agreement, Spooner officially joins the Legends. As for Behrad and Zari...they hash things out, and Behrad admitted he was selfish in hogging the totem. Both still argue about who should hold onto it, when our original Zari...still in the totem, has enough of the bickering, and splits it in two...one for both of them.
Our episode also dealt with the fallout from Gary and Sara's crash landing on this alien planet with a red hue. They have no idea where they are at, but Gary said they were taking Sara back to their planet: X-19. Here, they see what looks like an earth dog, and they believe they can go outside the ship, and explore, also to trace the dog to see where it's going. They eventually bump into what seems like lost aviator Emelia Earhart. She says that she'd been doing her flight around the world, when she lost control of her plane, and wound up here. Sara notices that something is a little off, but says that she has a ship, and could use Emelia's help in repairing it. Emelia sees this as a sign to go home, though Sara knows she can't change history, but lies anyway. As they visit with Emelia, she ends up repeating her story over again---and Sara knows that it's time to leave. However, Emelia attacks, and it turns out, she's an alien, and nails Sara in the arm. Wounded, Gary helps Sara and they flee. Sara, however, is too weak to go on, and just as Sara is about to pass out, they notice what looks like lights from fireflies moving towards them.
This episode had the usual mirth and mayhem involved in it, but I had almost thought this was going to go along the lines of a more Soylent Green route, or feeling like we were visiting an episode of You Can't Do That On Television, where we had the segment with the Barthy Burgers. But, as it turned out....it was the secret sauce. It was still gross, considering that it was goo from the cocoon of the moth creature. It was cheesy, but it's what you can expect from this crew. Spooner finally earning Ava's trust, and joining the Legends just gives us yet another oddball to add to the group. I'm also still convinced that she's a metahuman who can detect an alien presence, and doesn't have an implant in her head, since Gideon confirmed that. It was cool to see the brother/sister dynamic of Behrad and Zari being---well, brother and sister. Having them bicker about an heirloom they heisted from the family is funny, but we also see the reasons why Behrad did lift it---to give himself more of an identity outside of his more famous sister. Them working together was pretty cool at the end, and how about getting an appearance from our Original Zari, as she split the totem in two for the both of them.
Sara and Gary on an alien planet with an alien Amelia Earhart, a dog, and now some kind of firefly looking lights on the horizon---not a good combo. Plus...who knows what the alien Earhart did to Sara to wound her. Gary's going to have to step up to help his Captain out. So, Sara's story only gets more interesting from here---plus why was it that out of all the people that could've been abducted...WHY Sara? Hopefully, more answers will come in the coming weeks. I'm just curious at how long they plan to drag out the "Search for Sara" storyline.
