SUPERGIRL 6.5

RECAP - SUPERGIRL  6.5:  "Prom Night"

We got to visit this past this week on Supergirl, as Brainy and Nia travel back in time to procure a DNA sample of Kara's so that they have her genetic marker in order to bring it back, use the device Lena built, and bring the current Kara Zor-El home.  But as you know---things are NEVER easy where time travel is concerned...and often have disastrous results.  Nothing ever goes as planned or as smoothly, and there was a heaping dose of THAT this week.  Plus...we get to peek back in on the younger Alex and Kara, and see what THEY had done in this time period.

The Superfriends devised a VERY simple plan to obtain Kara's DNA from when she was younger.  She had destroyed a meteorite around Prom Night at the high school gym that was being renovated at the time.  Turns out, the meteorite had bits of Kryptonite in it, and it was the first time Alex had witnessed Kara bleeding.  So, Brainy and Nia volunteer to go, because if J'onn and Alex go, there's a chance they run into their younger selves, and throw the past into chaos.  Alex warns Brainy---who, mind you, has been stress eating the last couple of episodes, because he can't seem to get a hold of his emotional state, not to mess her past up.

The duo head off into the past---where Brainy has had issues hitting the mark before (once missing by 12,000 years), and Nia TRIES to put Brainy's mind at ease, but it's difficult to do.  Something goes awry with the navigation system, and they end up crash landing on the football field at Midvale High.  It's during THIS time that Kara and the now alive Kenny (the young boy who had died helping Kara and Alex on their first case a year or so back, but is now Kara's boyfriend in this post-CRISIS Earth), talking about how they wrote a story talking about how Midvale was the Luckiest City in America.  Apparently, Kenny and Kara have been doing some secret hero stuff while Alex has been away at college.  Alex isn't particularly thrilled that Kara is taking these risks, and makes Kara promise to stop.  They also talk about the fact that Kara hasn't told Kenny about possibly leaving Midvale to go to another college after high school.  Kara then hears the sounds of Brainy's ship crash landing at the high school, and the three go to investigate.

Brainy and Nia decide to try and blend in---and do a bad job of it.  Using the all-too familiar names of "Brandon" and "Brenda" to try and blend it, but do exactly what they weren't supposed to do:  make contact with the younger Alex and Kara.  They do what they can to cover their tracks by lying about being from another planet.  So, with Kara's help, they do what they can to hide the ship beneath the football field.  It turns out, Brainy needs a special element in order to get the ship back into operation.  Alex tells them that they have that rare element at her mother's lab at the college.  Her, Kara, and Nia will go there the following day to retrieve it, while Brainy and Kenny head to the high school computer lab to see if Brainy can print a 3-D image of the part he needs to get Kara's DNA sample.  Kenny heads to class while Brainy stays in the lab, until he gets stressed, and needs to eat, so he leaves the lab to get to the vending machine, only to be caught by the music teacher.  Kenny later finds Brainy at the baseball field, taking out his frustrations, and it's still not enough for Brainy to overcome his emotional mindset.

Alex, Kara, and Nia get the desired element from Eliza's lab, but on their way back home, they spot a runaway diesel truck that turns out has no driver, and is running recklessly on the highway.  This is a trap set up by an alien being named Tork, who is a collector---a "zookeeper" of sorts, collecting rare species, and that includes Kryptonians.  They had completely failed in trying to capture Superman earlier, but now set their sights on his younger cousin. So, the trio head after the truck to stop it before it causes harm to others.  They do stop it, but discover Tork and his assistant lurking about, but they disappear before the ladies can track them.

Later on, Cat manages to get pictures a young boy took of the semi truck incident, and discovers the shadow of an alien aircraft in it.  She had been tracking Alex, Kara, and Nia thinking they new something, as she had questioned Alex earlier at the college about the happenings in Midvale.  This later sparks an argument between Alex and Kara, whom Alex scolds for all her hero activities, and says that they need to tell Eliza, but Kara says she can fix it.  Alex calls her out on her immaturity, and blames her for having to give up her summer in Europe, because the family was concerned about her.  Kara said fine, and she'll go it alone, so that no one has to worry about her.

Nia has been having a dream about a caged pink cougar, and has had trouble deciphering it.  Once they had stopped the semi from causing a wreck and explosion, she has the dream again, and sees the culprits behind it - Tork and his assistant.  She surmises that they are collectors, and they form a plan to capture them, and get rid of them before they capture Kara.  Unfortunately, it turns out they were lured into a trap, and Tork gets the jump on them, capturing them for his zoo.

This episode had a little bit of fun in it, considering the entire goal was to get Kara's DNA sample from when she punches out a meteorite during Prom Night at Midvale High.  But we never GET to that part, because of Nia and Brainy's miscalculations, their ship having issues,  bumping into Kara and Alex...which they WEREN'T supposed to to do.  But, it does give us a chance to revisit the younger versions of the Danvers Sisters.  And we're QUITE surprised when we find out that their friend Kenny is VERY much alive...with CRISIS having "corrected" several mistakes.  And in this merged world, he's Kara's boyfriend.  And they do the superhero thing together...much to Alex's chagrin.  It's also apparent that younger Alex STILL harbors some angst towards having to protect Kara's secret ID and her powers.  It was comical to see Brainy and Nia have to navigate through late 90's Midvale as "Brandon and Brenda".  Brainy's exploits into trying to relieve his stress eating and finding other avenues to curb his emotional reactions was funny.

As for Nia---we see a moment where her and Kara connect...and they show off their powers.  They also both discuss their mothers.  At this time, Kara's mother Alura is presumed dead, because Argo had not been discovered yet, and Nia's mother passed away when she got older.  So, Nia ended up breaking a cardinal time travel rule and called her mother....just to hear the voice message. She has been dealing with the fact that she's not been able to properly focus her powers, because she doesn't have the guidance form her mother---and her sister still hates her because it was Nia---a transgendered woman--who got the family powers...and not her sister, as they had assumed.  So, Nia hasn't been able to resolve her family issues as yet, and I am not sure they will before the series' end.

And....I have been BEGGING for Cat Grant to come back to the show before it takes its final bow---but I certainly wasn't expecting a young Cat Grant making her appearance in Midvale on a story that would...as she put it..."Get out from under Lois Lane's shadow, and away from Perry White."  So, the actress, Eliza Helm, deserves MASSIVE kudos for her portrayal of the ambitious "CJ Grant'.  She must have watched Calista Flockhart religiously before taking this role, because she had EVERY movement, demeanor, vocal tone, and attitude down to the minutest detail.  She NAILED this part!  That was, perhaps, MY favorite part of the show.  But don't get me wrong---I won't rest until we get Calista back before the show ends.  We need the adult Cat Grant...sassy as ever...gracing our tv screens.

So...did YOU guys like this episode?  What did you think of the performances?  Subscribe and drop me a comment below.  I'm dying to hear YOUR response on this episode.

Until next time....Up, up, and away!
